Baby Got SKUNKED and we can't get rid of the smell!!
Hi, I think baby got skunked yesterday.. she came in the the most awful smell ever! We gave her three baths. One with shampoo the second time we used tomato sauce and the third time we used blended orange and cinnamon with soap. The smell keeps coming back and we cant get rid of it.The tomato and orange with cinnamon made it better but the smell keeps coming back on her neck and ears.
How can we get rid of it?
Thankyou

Tomato juice won't help. Been there many times, lol. The best solution is a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, mixed with about 1/4 c baking soda & a generous squirt of lemon dish soap. Get it right down to the skin, leave on for about 3 -5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Be careful NOT to get this in her eyes. Wiley just won't learn to leave 'em alone & gets skunked quite often. This works!!

I heard the hydrogen peroxide method works. If not, you can look at www.fastskunksmellremoval.com as it seems they guarantee their formula works.

I did tomato juice and baking soda & vinegar and SkunkOff and nothing really worked. You just have to wait it out for about a month, when it will fade away.

Libby's right..the smell penetrates the dog hairs and everytime they get wet you will smell it until those hairs are shed out, usually about five months or so.
Some of the products, especially the peroxide one, will help but only if used on FRESH, still wet skunk spray. If using an enzymatic product it needs to be used before anything else, especially a bath with regular shampoo or even dawn.
Always inspect the inside of your dog's mouth or eyes when it has been sprayed, and get veterinary treatment if there is excessive redness or inflamation. Skunk spray can actually burn soft tissue and cause serious injury. We groom a blind golden retriever who lost his eyesight due to skunk spray burning his eyes. Had they been treated immediately his eyesight could have been saved.
