History

National Dog Day is celebrated every year on May 20th. The day was created in 2010 by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige. Paige is also the founder of National Dog Week, National Cat Day, and National Mutt Day. The day is meant to celebrate all dogs, mixed breed and purebred alike, and to encourage adoption from shelters and rescue organizations.

It’s also a day to acknowledge the work of service dogs, police dogs, military dogs, and therapy dogs. In addition to celebrating our furry friends, National Dog Day is also a day to promote dog adoption and responsible dog ownership. Finally, it’s a day to thank shelter and rescue workers for their tireless efforts in caring for homeless dogs.
