The Earliest Records of Oodle Dog in History

Since the Oodle dog is any mix of a purebred dog with a Poodle, to understand where the Oodle dog comes from, you need to understand the history of the Poodle. While the breed is extremely popular in France, the Poodle actually comes from Germany.

While the intentional breeding of the Poodle with other purebred breeds is a newer phenomenon, it’s likely that at least some people have been intentionally breeding the Poodle with other breeds long before then, but they just didn’t gain popularity until recently.

It’s also worth noting that while the intentional and consistent breeding of a Poodle with other purebred breeds is a newer thing, it’s all relative. For instance, the Labradoodle was the first Oodle dog and it came about in 1989, which is over 30 years ago!

How Oodle Dog Gained Popularity

The Oodle dog gained popularity for a few different reasons, primarily because people wanted Poodle traits in other breeds. Whether it’s their high intelligence levels, sweet personalities, or hypoallergenic coats, there are quite a few coats people want to try and bring into other breeds.

But keep in mind that no breeder can select which trait a dog will inherit from each parent, so you can’t guarantee an Oodle dog will inherit anything from their Poodle parent unless the other breed possesses the same trait.

Today, Oodle dogs are extremely popular as companion dogs and are specifically bred by many breeders.

Formal Recognition of Oodle Dog

Since formal recognition of any breed requires consistent breeding following the same standards for multiple generations of dogs, you’re never going to find a formally recognized Oodle dog. That’s because you never know what characteristics an Oodle dog will take from each parent, leaving large variances between each pup.

Still, while you won’t find registries like the AKC accepting Oodle dogs, there are some designer breed registries that recognize them. You just have to keep in mind there will always be a large variance in dogs because you don’t know which parent they will take after!
