Dogster_Supreme Source Dog Food Review

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

Supreme Source Dog Food receives a 4 out of 5 rating from us.

There are many dog food brands on the market today, and each of them claims to be the best for your pup. However, not all of them are created equal. In this article, we will discuss the factors you need to consider before choosing the Supreme Source brand to help you make an informed decision about whether it is right for your pet. Supreme Source Dog Food is considered by many to be a high-quality brand of dog food. Made in the USA, it is a small-range, grain-free, protein-rich food that is designed to meet the needs of large and small dogs. The food has been praised for its quality and taste by pet owners and is one of the highest-rated dog foods on the market.

Before you rush out to buy Supreme Source, you should know that it contains legumes as a top ingredient. According to recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, feeding some dogs grain-free/legume-rich foods regularly may significantly increase their risk of a particular kind of heart disease.1 This link is still being investigated, but it’s wise to do your homework so you can choose wisely and avoid potential health problems. With that in mind, we’ll examine Supreme Source in more detail.

Supreme Source Pet Foods offers a tiny range of dog food products—just five dry foods and two biscuits.  Chewy and Amazon are the most popular places to shop online for pet food, and they sell Supreme Source’s products on their websites, but only Chewy carries their full range.

Who Makes Supreme Source Dog Food, and Where Is It Produced?

Supreme Source is manufactured by American Nutrition, a family-owned pet food and treat manufacturing company located in Ogden, Utah, since 1972. According to the company, its food surpasses the strictest requirements of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and the FDA. American Nutrition has been in the pet food business for over five decades.

Alongside the Supreme Source label, American Nutrition also sells pet food under eight additional in-house brands: Vita Bone Dog Biscuits, Beggar Dog Biscuits, Atta Boy! Dog Food, Atta Cat! Cat Food, Maintain Chunks Dog Food, Pro-Source Dog Food, TriPro Pet Food, and Farm Style Pet Food. In addition to producing pet food for its own labels, American Nutrition also manufactures other pet food brands and says that it provides its recipe knowledge, market insight, and production services to leading retailers.

Which Type of Dog Is Supreme Source Dog Food Best Suited for?

Supreme Source Pet Foods doesn’t produce life-stage-specific formulas, e.g., for puppies, pregnant or lactating dogs, or seniors. It also doesn’t manufacture formulations for specific dog breeds or sizes. However, despite having a limited variety of formulations, Supreme Source claims that its products are suitable for dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds.

Which Type of Dog Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

Dogs of different breeds may respond better to other brands of dog food. A different brand of food may be best for your dog if they are at risk of specific health issues, particularly heart issues. If your dog suffers from a heart condition or is at risk of developing a heart issue, it is essential to consult your veterinarian about the right dog food for them.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good & Bad)

There are a few primary ingredients in Supreme Source that warrant further discussion. First, the good: the food contains high-quality protein from real meat and meat meals made from beef, chicken, lamb, and fish. Supreme Source’s formulations contain the recommended amounts of protein and fat as well as a number of beneficial vitamins and minerals. The formulas also contain vegetables and fruits, which provide your dog with important antioxidants.

Unfortunately, all of Supreme Source’s dog foods also contain questionable ingredients, including legumes and tomato pomace. Additionally, none of the Supreme Source recipes contain any probiotics. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help keep your dog’s digestive system healthy.

    Legumes

Supreme Source recipes use legumes such as peas, lentils, fava beans, and chickpeas rather than grains. Numerous brands use legumes in grain-free pet food because they are relatively inexpensive and provide a balance of carbohydrates, fiber, and plant-based protein. In recent years, there have been concerns about the association between a high proportion of legumes in dog food recipes and an increase in canine heart disease.

For some pet owners, the mere presence of these legumes is off-putting. In 2019, veterinarians from the University of California, Davis, found a link between grain-free, legume-rich dog diets and taurine-deficient dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. Although a direct, causative link between legumes and DCM has not been found, a correlation is still being investigated. The FDA has found that almost all diets associated with non-hereditary DCM had legume ingredients high on their ingredient lists (e.g., peas, lentils, etc.).

Both grain-free and grain-inclusive formulas include legumes. For many years, pulse ingredients, including legumes, have been used in pet foods without a hint of inherent danger, but analysis of data reported to CVM indicates that pulse ingredients are used in more significant proportions than in most grain-inclusive formulas in many “grain-free” diets. So, it’s important to note that Supreme Source is grain-free, legume-rich dog food, which also does not contain dietary sources of taurine, such as organ meat, and does not list taurine as an additive.

    Tomato Pomace

Tomato pomace is the solid material that remains after tomatoes have been juiced and the juice has been removed. Pomace is made up of skin, seeds, and flesh that has been ground up. It is a high-fiber, low-calorie food used to make tomato sauce, ketchup, and other products. This is a somewhat controversial dog food ingredient.

Although it is found in many recipes, there is a difference of opinion on whether this byproduct is a cheap filler or a source of fiber. Several dog food manufacturers claim it adds roughage to dog food, but many owners say it is sometimes used to bulk up lower-quality foods.

    Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are thought to be beneficial to the gut flora in humans and animals. They are often added to food products, such as dog food, in order to promote a healthy digestive system. Probiotics can be found in natural and processed forms, and there is some evidence to suggest that they may help with various gastrointestinal issues.

However, more research is needed to determine the full extent of their benefits. Without probiotics, it is thought that dogs may be more susceptible to gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea and vomiting.

    Recall History

No recalls have been associated with Supreme Source Pet Foods, according to the FDA, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and DogFoodAdvisor. Since the brand has a modest market share and a small number of products, it may not be unexpected that there haven’t been any recalls.

However, American Nutrition has been in business for almost 50 years, and the parent company has also not had a recall in that time. So, given their track record, we think it’s safe to consider their facilities and ingredients as safe as any in the industry. However, we recommend using the links above periodically to track future recalls (irrespective of the food you feed your dog).

Reviews of the 3 Best Supreme Source Dog Food Pet Food Recipes

Taking a closer look at three Supreme Source dog food formulas will help you understand the products. We chose to focus on these formulas because they are indicative of the total range, provide complete and balanced nutrition for dogs at all stages of their lives, and are made with top-quality ingredients.

    1. Supreme Source Grain-Free Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato Recipe Dry Dog Food

Supreme Source Grain-Free Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato Recipe Dry Dog Food

This dry dog food is designed to be a high-quality, grain-free diet with a focus on salmon as the primary protein source. Sweet potatoes provide added nutrients and flavor, making this a healthy and delicious meal for your pet. The first ingredient is salmon meal, which contains even more protein than fresh salmon. Peas, chickpeas, sweet potatoes, berries, and more are also included. It is formulated to deliver 100% complete nutrition to support your dog’s growth and development. No corn, soy, artificial flavors, or colors are added.

Like all of the Supreme Source kibbles, this recipe is grain-free. Depending on your interpretation of the ongoing research on grains for dogs, this may be a plus or a minus. Most owners say their dogs love the flavor, but some dogs refuse to eat it. The manufacturer also admits that although they endeavor to make their food using US ingredients, there are times when this recipe is manufactured using imported foods.

    Pros
    • First ingredient is salmon meal
    • Sweet potatoes, berries, and more are also included
    • Designed to deliver 100% complete nutrition
    • Suitable for dogs on a grain-free diet
    • No soy, corn, artificial flavors, or colors
    Cons
    • Legumes as a top three ingredient
    • Some dogs dislike the flavor
    • Sometimes manufactured with non-US ingredients

    2. Supreme Source Grain-Free Pork, Peas & Wild Boar Recipe Dry Dog Food

Supreme Source Grain-Free Pork, Peas & Wild Boar Recipe Dry Dog Food

The Supreme Source Grain-Free Pork, Peas, and Wild Boar Recipe Dry Dog Food is a high-quality recipe designed to provide dogs with all the nutrients they need to stay healthy, including protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. The first ingredient is pork, and the fifth is wild boar. Other ingredients include lentils, fava beans, carrots, berries, and spinach. So, in addition to being grain-free, the Supreme Source kibble contains abundant amounts of legumes.

Depending on how you choose to interpret the ongoing research on grains for dogs, this may be positive or negative. If you have concerns, you should consult your vet for guidance. The formula also contains Ascophyllum Nodosum, a single-species seaweed that the manufacturer says provides a range of health benefits to dogs.

It does not contain corn, soy, artificial flavors, or colors. Although most owners say their dogs love the flavor and eat it, some dogs refuse to eat it. Again, the manufacturer also acknowledges that there are times when this recipe is manufactured with imported ingredients despite their best efforts to only use US-sourced ingredients.

    Pros
    • A high-quality dog food
    • Provides dogs with complete nutrition
    • Suitable for all life stages
    • No artificial colors or flavors
    • Suitable for dogs on a grain-free diet
    Cons
    • High in legumes
    • Not suitable for dogs on grain-inclusive diets
    • Some dogs refuse to eat it
    • Some ingredients imported from overseas

    3. Supreme Source Beef, Chicken Meal & Lentil Recipe Dry Dog Food

    Supreme Source Beef, Chicken Meal

The Supreme Source Beef, Chicken Meal & Lentil Recipe Dry Dog Food is a high-quality food made with real beef, chicken, and lentils. It is designed to give your dog all the nutrients they need to stay healthy and happy. It is also free of artificial flavors and colors, so you can feel confident that your dog is getting the best nutrition. It is also fortified with essential vitamins and minerals.

Supreme Source dog food is perfect for dogs with allergies or sensitivities to grains, but chicken and beef are the meat sources most likely to trigger protein allergies in dogs, so this may not be the right choice for all pets. Besides being grain-free, the Supreme Source kibble contains an abundance of legumes. As always, some dogs refuse to eat this food, even though most owners say their dogs love the taste. The manufacturer acknowledges that this recipe may sometimes contain imported ingredients despite its best efforts to source only ingredients from the United States.

    Pros
    • Dog food of high quality
    • Complete nutrition for dogs
    • Suitable for all stages of life
    • There are no artificial colors or flavors
    • Suitable for grain-free dogs
    Cons
    • If you are concerned about DCM, this product may not be suitable

    What Other Owners Are Saying

There is no doubt in the minds of other dog owners that Supreme Source Dog Food contains the highest quality ingredients. Many owners who switched to Supreme Source report that their dogs have a stronger immune system, better skin, and a healthier coat.

It has also been reported that many dogs prefer the food over other brands, helping with allergies, weight gain, and digestive problems. However, before purchasing, be sure to look at other pet owners’ reviews on Chewy and Amazon. You can read Supreme Source product reviews at these links on Amazon and Chewy.

    Conclusion

In conclusion, Supreme Source is a trustworthy brand of dog food that most pups seem to love. The brand has no recall history, even though the parent company has been in business for almost 50 years. The only downside to this brand is the lack of grain-inclusive recipes, which is a shame if you are worried about DCM in your dog.
