Dogster_Great Dane Names

Let’s get the obvious names out of the way: Two of the most famous Great Danes are Scooby-Doo and Marmaduke, so those are options for your Great Dane. If those dog names are not for you, though, we have plenty more for you to consider.

These ginormous dogs are worthy of a unique and grand name that suits such a majestic breed, but we know how difficult it can be to come up with just the right name. Whether you have a new Great Dane puppy or have adopted an adult, you’ll want a name that you like, that suits your dog, and that sounds okay when you need to yell it out at the dog park.

So, here are more than 150 names that cover various features: There are male, female, and genderless names, as well as names based on color, specifically blue, black, and harlequin. We’ve organized each list in alphabetical order so you can easily find the perfect name for your very large, very beautiful dog!

How to Name Your Great Dane

There are many ways to come up with names for Great Danes. For example, many people use the color or pattern of their pets as inspiration. There’s also the dog’s background. Great Danes are German in origin, and you could look up words, colors, or items in German and give your dog a unique German name.

You can also use the names of your favorite celebrities, musicians, or famous characters from books, TV, or movies. Some people like to name their dog after their unique personality or physical trait or quirk. You can even consider traditional horse names, given how large Great Danes are. A pure black Great Dane would make a wonderful and majestic Midnight!

We’ll go over these ideas and categories, and we hope that you’ll find something that works for you and your pup.

Great Dane Colors and Patterns

Before the names, here is a list of the patterns and colors that Great Dane dogs come in. These colors might also help you come up with a name.

  • Solid colors: Black, blue, fawn, silver, chocolate
  • Bicolor: Black and white, blue and white, chocolate and white
  • Mantle: White and black, with black blanketing most of the body
  • Mantle Merle: White and merle, with the merle coloring blanketing the body
  • Merle: Light to dark gray body with black patches (and blue eyes)
  • Brindle: Golden, light fawn, or dark golden-red base with tiger stripes (also comes in blue brindle and chocolate brindle)
  • Harlequin: Black-and-white patchwork markings

They can also have various markings, such as:

If your Great Dane is one of these colors or patterns, it could help you choose a name. Maybe it won’t be original to call your merle-colored dog “Merle,” but also, why not? There aren’t any rules when choosing a name for your pet!

Use Your Imagination!

You can name your dog almost anything. But remember to try out the name before you commit to it. Try saying it out loud several times, and see if it is something that you’re comfortable with. In the long run, though, your dog doesn’t care about their name. It’s all about your attention and love.

You can even give your pup a silly name: Cookie Monster (also works if your dog is blue), Pee Wee (Herman), Porkchop, Pup Tart, Bingo, Captain Chaos, to name a few. The world is your oyster!
