Visiting the Beach With Your Dog in Galveston

When we said a dog lover’s paradise, we weren’t kidding. All of Galveston’s public beaches are pet-friendly, they just need to be on a leash. East Beach is among the most popular, as it features a lot of amenities including the pavilion, boardwalk, restrooms, showers, umbrella and chair rentals, concessions, and plenty of festivals and concerts.

Galveston has plenty of awesome beaches to visit with your dog, though. All they ask is that your pup always stays on a leash and you pick up after them if they make a mess. So, don’t forget to pack those poop bags with all your beach gear.

The 9 Things to Do in Galveston With Your Pup

The beaches aren’t the only things dog-friendly, so don’t think you are limited when it comes to your Galveston trip. Here are some other things you can do with your pup during your beach getaway to Galveston Island.

1. Rent a Pet-Friendly Beach House

Galveston has plenty of beach houses and vacation rentals for your stay. This is one of the best ways to enjoy your time on Galveston Island and many of these rentals are pet-friendly. This way you can pick the perfect rental that suits your needs and rest assured that your furry family member is as welcome as you are.

2. Enjoy Some Food and Drinks at a Dog-Friendly Establishment

You won’t run into this everywhere, and though it seems too good to be true, Galveston is home to over 20 dog-friendly dining establishments. You read that right, there are plenty of options for you in the area and many of them have pet-friendly patios, so you don’t have to leave your pup behind when you need to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.

Here are some of the most popular dog-friendly spots:

  • Yaga’s Café
  • MOD Coffeehouse
  • Sugar Bean Coffee & Cream
  • The Sunflower Bakery and Café
  • Mosquito Café
  • Olympia Grill at Pier 21
  • Little Daddy’s Gumbo Bar
  • Willie G’s Seafood and Steak House

3. Take a Walk Along Galveston’s Historic Strand

The Strand in downtown Galveston is a must-visit for anyone visiting the island. There are over 70 blocks that are tastefully and colorfully decorated for the seasons. You’ll get to admire the historic architecture and beautiful views.

You can even drop into one of the museums, shop to your heart’s desire at the numerous shops in the area, or stop by a tasty eatery.

4. Shop at One of the Dog-Friendly Establishments

Did we mention that there are several shops in the Galveston area that will happily welcome your pooch?

  • Surf Styles Surf Shop
  • Kites Unlimited
  • Dorothy Mays
  • Strand Brass and Christmas on the Strand

5. Capture a Memory

A picture is worth a thousand words, so why not capture your precious memory by visiting Buster’s Old Time Photos? This place was featured in National Geographic’s Dog Lover’s Guide to Travel and can offer you a priceless souvenir you can cherish for a lifetime.

6. Visit a Dog-Friendly Park

There are plenty of parks in the Galveston area that allow dogs, but there are some that focus specifically on doggies and their humans. This includes Lindale Park, Menard Park, and Kempner Park. What’s even better? Admission is free for all parks, and each offers its own unique experience.

7. Rent a Kayak Together

Do you and your pup like venturing out into the open water together? If so, you can stop by Pinky’s Kayak Rentals which not only offers rentals, but various activities and guided tours.

8. Go on a Ghost Tour

We mentioned earlier that Galveston is steeped in history and dog-friendliness, so much so that you can even go on the Authentic Galveston Ghost Tour with your leashed pup. This 90-minute tour will teach you about the history of Galveston as you visit some historical sites and will have you diving into the world of the paranormal with your sweet pooch by your side.

9. Go Dolphin Watching

Baywatch Dolphin Tours is not just environmentally friendly, but also pet-friendly. If you want to take a 45-minute dolphin-watching excursion with your dog, this will give you the chance to view these gorgeous marine mammals in their natural habitat.

The company puts safety as its top priority, and you will get to explore the harbor, watch the dolphins, and learn lots of interesting facts about these incredible creatures. There’s a fee for the humans but the dogs get a free pass.

Conclusion

Dogs are welcome on all public beaches in Galveston. According to Galveston Island Beach Patrol, dogs must be always on a leash and owners are responsible for cleaning up their excrement.  This is an incredibly dog-friendly place to vacation, and the beaches aren’t the only things you can enjoy with your dog in Galveston.
