Do Weimaraners Shed More Than Other Dogs? Facts & FAQ

Weimaraners are hunting dogs prized for their unique appearance, short coats, and attentive personalities. When it comes to a Weimaraner’s coat, there is a lot of conflicting information. Some people claim Weimaraners shed more than other dogs. Other people say Weimaraners hardly shed. Still, others believe that Weimaraners don’t shed at all and are hypoallergenic. But who is correct? Do Weimaraners shed more than other dogs or less than other dogs?

The answer is that Weimaraners actually shed an average amount. They shed more than you would expect for a dog with a short coat, but they do not shed more than usual. If you are expecting Weimaraners to have a very low amount of shedding, you will be disappointed to learn that these dogs do shed quite a bit. Weimaraners do benefit from their short coats, and they will not shed as much as long-haired dogs such as Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds.

How Much Do Weimaraners Shed?

Weimaraners shed more than other short-coated dogs, such as Boston Terriers. They also shed more than dogs with human-like hair, such as Poodles. However, they do not shed as much as long-haired dogs. The best way to describe Weimaraner shedding practices is average. They do not shed more than a normal amount, and they do not shed less than usual. Some people erroneously believe that Weimaraners do not shed at all. Weimaraners do shed, and during certain parts of the year, they can shed quite a lot.

When Do Weimaraners Shed?

Weimaraners shed the most during the spring and autumn. In the spring, your Weimaraner will start shedding its winter coat in preparation for summer. During the fall months, your Weimaraner will start shedding parts of its summer coat in preparation for growing its winter coat. During these times, you will notice your dog shedding more than usual. While these seasons include the highest typical rates of shedding, Weimaraners can shed at any time.

During the winter and the summer, you will notice that Weimaraners tend to shed less. In the winter, Weimaraners try to keep their winter coats thick and intact to keep themselves warm. In the summer, a Weimaraner has less fur and a thinner coat that does not have as much fur to shed out. Regularly bathing and brushing your Weimaraner, especially during shedding seasons, can help keep the excess fur to a minimum. Bathing your Weimaraner will help get loose fur off and prevent it from getting all over your house. The good news is that since Weimaraners have short, sleek coats, brushing them and bathing them is a very easy task.

    Are Weimaraners Hypoallergenic?

    No. Weimaraners are not hypoallergenic. Some people believe that since Weimaraners have short coats, they do not shed or give off allergens that exacerbate a person’s allergies. That is simply not the case. In fact, most people are allergic to a dog’s saliva and urine in addition to fur and dander. The fact that Weimaraners shed an average amount, combined with the fact that most people have multiple allergy triggers, means that Weimaraners are not hypoallergenic at all. There are no truly hypoallergenic dogs.

    Weimaraners shed an average amount. They do not shed less or more than other dogs. Some people think that a Weimaraner’s short coat will change their shedding habits, but that is not the case. Just like other average dogs, Weimaraners will shed consistently throughout the year and shed more than average during the spring and autumn months. Brushing and bathing your Weimaraner on a regular basis will help keep the shedding to a more manageable level than if you do not.
