I’ve done a lot of dumb things in my life, but one that tops the charts is having a doggie playdate at my house. Here’s my story of what went wrong and a few tips to save you — and your dog! — from disaster when setting up doggie playdates. A Doggie Playdate Gone Wrong […]
I am the proud pet parent of Axle, an American Pit Bull Terrier. He’s blessed our home and driven us mildly crazy for the past six years. He’s great with our cats and our daughter, he will only eat his eggs cooked, and his farts can wake us from the even the deepest sleep. In other words, he’s
I have a confession to make: I can’t remember the last time I took my dog Axle for a walk. Sometimes, I can’t remember if I fed him or not. He patiently walks back and forth between me and his bowl, placing his nose in it. I think his last bath was three weeks ago.
Chopper the Biker Dog is well-known for his leather duds and for his good works as a therapy dog in San Diego, California. From cruising on the back seat of his owner’s Harley Davidson to curling up on patient beds in hospitals, the 6-year-old Boston Terrier is a superstar with a big heart and an even bigger job — helping
Ever wonder how some people get such great photos of their dogs, particularly multiple pups posing together? And how about when there are kids and pets? Well, behind all of those cute pictures is a lot of work. We recently talked to Elizabeth LaBauve of Internet sensation The Tucker Farm to hear how she got started and to get some helpful tips.
I come from a small town, and our community strongly encourages shopping locally. In fact, one of our town slogans is to “Shop Local. Eat Local. Live Local.” That’s a good mantra to live by when you want to see local mom-and-pop businesses flourish amid big box stores and chains. However, there’s one local business I just
Blueberry the Pit Bull‘s story does not start off as a happy one, as she was forced to live in a laundry room and birth puppies for her owners to sell. After her 11 puppies were born, she was dumped at Milton Animal League with the reason of suspected mange. With red skin and missing much of her fur, Blueberry
Dog trainer Lisa Matthews recently added new credentials to her professional name. The owner and operator of Pawsitive Practice near Atlanta became an internationally certified dog behavior consultant (ICDBC) with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). As one of only three such consultants in the area, she joins an elite group dedicated to strengthening the human/canine
I recently attended BarkWorld Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, along with several of my Dogster colleagues. One of the keynote speakers was Luigi “Shorty” Rossi of Animal Planet’s Pit Boss fame. He brought along his service dog, Hercules, and gave an impassioned speech about Pit Bulls, rescues, and respect. Shorty’s love for animals, particularly bully breeds, can be traced all
What do you think about when you walk your dog? Are you just in a hurry to get home? While I’ve always tried to enjoy walks with my dog, Axle, I can’t say that our walks have ever been particularly relaxing. Often, I’m just happy the chore is done. G. Ray Sullivan, photographer and author of
I recently helped my grandmother say goodbye to her furry companion of nearly 16 years. Harley, a Toy Fox Terrier, was the first dog that was ever truly hers. Harley was 1 year old when she came to live with my nana, and the two were inseparable. Around her 16th birthday, Harley was diagnosed with cancer.
Shelter Me has been melting hearts since its premiere on PBS in 2012. Partners for Life, the latest installment in the documentary series about shelter pets, focuses on 12-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Emmylou Harris and the work she does through her dog rescue, Bonaparte’s Retreat. She is currently on tour, but we caught up with Harris to get the inside scoop
About a month ago, I helped my grandmother say goodbye to her furry companion of nearly 16 years. That’s when it hit me: My dog, Axle, will not live forever. With the average lifespan of his breed being 8 to 15 years, he could very well be considered middle-aged at almost 5. Once upon a time, that would
Unless you’re on a hiatus from social media, you’ve probably seen the pictures of two Pit Bull-type dogs in pajamas. Their Instagram account, @the_blueboys, boasts more than 100,000 followers and describes them as “Darren & Phillip, two very silly English Staffies from Brisbane, Australia. Best friends. Best cuddlers. Pyjama wearing blanket hoggers. Lovers of life.” As I perused
When you have children and dogs, you get inundated with all sorts of unsolicited advice. If you had dogs before kids, the advice includes being told that you should get rid of the dogs because having kids isn’t fair to the dogs and that they might even hurt the child. If you had a kid
Former “Walking Dead” actor Jon Bernthal may be busy prepping for his new role as The Punisher on “Daredevil,” Marvel’s comic book turned TV show for Netflix, but he always makes time to be a superhero to Pit Bulls. His most recent effort for the breed? Starring in a just-released PSA for Animal Farm Foundation.
Hulk may be a wonderful dog, but he should not be presented as the face of Pit Bulls.
A contractor visiting our office recently walked by my desk and stopped to admire the (many) pictures of my dog, Axle. “Ooo, you’ve got a Pit Bull?!” she exclaimed. “When’s he going to have puppies? I need a new one. My dog, she’s fixed and lazy. I need one that’s going to make me some
After adopting her own Pit Bulls in 2008, certified dog trainer Paige Burris experienced firsthand the daily discrimination they face on. In 2009, she founded The Positive Pit Bull, Inc., a group dedicated to educating the public about the dogs and debunking myths surrounding the breed. Using social media, The Positive Pit Bull strives to
As a new mother, I suddenly find myself understanding why some new parents give away their dogs. Have you ever been in this position?
Times are tough. Most of us are working hard just to make ends meet. With so little wiggle room in the budget, you may feel pressured when it comes to providing for your best friend. Some people may even view your pet as a luxury you can’t afford. Before you do something drastic, here’s some
Sure, some people raise their eyebrows at me, but plenty of others are either indifferent or quick to say something in support of the breed.
In Lowndes County, Georgia, a man was recently charged with animal cruelty for shooting his aggressive dog. The judge ruled that his actions were not “mean spirited,” but that he should have called animal control. He showed the news crew where his dog ate a hole through the chain-link fence. The dog lived on a
Some of my family members often reference how much cleaner (and nicer) my house could be if only I didn’t have “all those animals.” I have two dogs and two cats; not quite a zoo, but not lacking for fur, dirt, and the occasional chewed shoe. Thanks to a certain dog going through the last
I’m a major supporter of shelters, rescues, and spay/neuter. However, I recognize the importance in supporting responsible breeders, as well. Sound like an oxymoron? Not quite. Responsible breeders follow a strict code of ethics and take lifetime responsibility for the animals they produce. Responsible breeders produce healthy, well-tempered dogs and educate potential owners about the
I’ve written before that I wasn’t too fond of Pit Bulls before I fell head over heels for Axle. When Axle came to live with us, I tried to learn everything I could about the breed, and quickly got lost in the pros and cons, the attack stories, the nanny-dog stories, and the lover-not-a-fighter campaigns.
When I wrote the article “I Love My Dog More Than I Love My Husband,” I didn’t cover the fact that Axle, my super fantastic dog, is an American Pit Bull Terrier. How could I let that slip when I’m an advocate for Pit Bulls? Quite easily, actually, as I don’t consider his breed to
