Pet-Friendly Stores 2332 San Pablo Avenue Berkeley, CA 94702 East Bay Nursery first opened in 1926 as a combination flower stand and retail nursery. In the spring of 1942, Gordon Courtright happened to pass by the nursery and stopped to purchase some flowers for his wife, Addi. Leaving her in the truck, Gordon went in to make his purchase. Upon his return, Gordon, handed his wife the surprise bouquet of flowers and announced to her that he had just purchased East Bay Nursery, to which she responded; "have the price of flowers gone up that much?". The rest, they say, is history.
In 1951 Gordon built the 2500 square foot store, with many giggles from other local nursery owners, and the first "self serve" garden center in the nation was born. Gordon worked with the chemical manufacturers and redefined fertilizer and chemical packaging by introducing prepackaging in reasonable sized containers. Simultaneously, Gordon was also working with bedding plant growers designing take-home containers making the garden center that much more convenient for the shopper. Today, his daughter Bea and her husband Don own the nursery with their two sons Rob and Mike ready to take the nursery well into the new century. Armed with one of the most advanced plant labeling and information systems (developed on site) in the country, East Bay Nursery continues to blaze trails.

Pet-Friendly Stores, General Pet Stores, Pet Boutiques, Neighborhood Stores 1820 Solano Ave Berkeley, CA 94706 We moved here from Europe decades ago, and Albany/Berkeley has been our home for 30 years. We are embarking on this venture, not because we are business people (heck, we are career change academics with degrees from Cal ), but because we love our pets. We have four dogs (3 pugs and a dachshund) and a cat who is not totally happy about being so outnumbered. Our store is a true family effort.
All our kids are chipping in: Peter is helping us with the business side of things; Jennifer and Alexis, having worked for natural pet food companies for over 8 years, are our consultants; Dylan is painting the store and putting up fixtures; Jonas does the computer and graphic work; and Annie and Katya will be our on-site helpers.
And last, but not least, Ruby, our black pug, will be our store mascot. She will be the one languishing on the divan in the shop window - hoping to be petted or fed a treat (she lives for both). Visit us and meet her, because she will be pleased to meet you.
We hope to see you at our new store!

Not for those who want pepperoni!
