Behavior & Training > advice on training a 7 month old kelpie
Ashlyn

who me? no way..- i'm too cute!!!

hi.. i just adopted a 7 month old kelpie from the pound, saving her being put down because her time at the pound was running out.. they only keep the dogs for 28 days before they put the dog down.

i don't know much about kelpies but know that they learn differently from whippets (which i have 2) so can anyone give me some advice on how i should go about training her? she's really sweet and so far hasn't had any trouble at all

also, how do we properly intergrate a new 4 pawed member to the family (doggy of course)?

Choosing the Right Dog > Could someone provide me more first hand info about owning a belgian malinois?

okay, i have seem to have sparked some random debate here.. i do state again that i will not get a mal YET or anytime too soon (took 3 years to decide on a whippet) as i do have to sort some things out. the reason i would like to have a mal is because i might be eligible to own a psychiatric service dog to help me deal with being in public places. now i'm not sure how many of you are familiar with PSDs but they basically act like a normal service dog and go everywhere with me (thus I don't have to worry about the separation or mental stimulation). although my whippets do have a lot of traits for a PSD, I think I need a slightly bigger dog to provide a more distinct presence to me. I do pride myself in being a responsible owner as I do not want to see any dog i chose suffer due to my ignorance (thus all this researching). I am also going to take a dog training course and become a trainer specializing in service dog training and perhaps drug detection. knowing about the prey drive on a mal, I opt to get a puppy from a reputable breeder (who also socializes the pups to other animals) instead of an adult dog who might have not been socialized as much. My whippets have no trouble playing with bigger dogs as they play with a growing ridgeback off leash in a dog park (with full supervision). I know that with proper socialisation and supervision, the puppy will get used to smaller dogs and will hopefully learn to be less boisterous with smaller dogs. Someone mentioned in an earlier post about a doberman. I do like the build and clean lines but something about them has put me a little off the breed ( no offense to anyone) so they are definately off my list. You are right about my favouring lean clean lines as seen in a whippet/greyhound.

I do have a question to most of the posters. everyone keeps saying german breed. aren't belgian malinois from BELGIUM and not germany? or am i a little ignorant? i know it brings little difference to the argument but just for knowledge sake i'm wondering why everyone says its german.

hello!! I have fallen in love with the breed and am hoping to learn more about them. Not having had a working dog before, I would like to get some HONEST testimonials/opinions from all of you about owning one? Especially with first time owners? I am a passinate dog lover and will only get one if I have done my proper research. (I spent over 3 years researching about my little whippets) Thanks in advance!!

Behavior & Training > Can they see GHOSTS???

i myself believe that ghosts/spirits of the departed can contact us in our dreams.. this is because our conscious is asleep (so to speak) and we are more open (less thoughts/stress) and lack the 'noise' of the world that our subconscious and conscious experiences while we are awake. the conscious also hinders us from 'listening' to them as rationality does not exactly permit 'ghosts/spirits' to 'exist'. smile

hi hi.. my two furkids are coming home from a looong boarding and training course while i'm overseas (3 weeks).. i am picking them up on the 15th (currently i'm still overseas).

is there any advice to how i should bring them home after such a long time away from me? forinstance, how i should have the 'reunion'? are there things i should n should not do?

i left them a shirt of mine when i dropped them off at the kennel so they won't forget me wink

blade, i don't know where the myth started from but i'm asian and my chinese ancestry has enough myths like this as well smile although in my opinion, asian cultures and possibly other native cultures, have very convincing ghost stories and myth that i'm not entirely sure are 'stories' or 'myths'.

i believe animals can see ghosts and spirits.. but i grew up in a culture where ghosts stories had inklings of truth in them and most of us would have experienced something by the time we were 30 (yes yes i'm not that old but i'm giving an average). there's a myth which hasn't been proven through science etc but it goes someway where if you take a dog's tears and drop it in your eyes, you will be able to temporarily see ghosts. which is why quite a lot of dogs howl and bark at nothing especially at night? not entirely sure. i know one thing is that adults cannot see ghosts/supernatural stuff because they/we have closed our minds to things that we think we 'KNOW' don't exist (unless of course you've seen one) and most are not as observant anymore to things that we usually notice as a kid. smile the mind is a powerful thing. and once u drill into ur mind that ghosts don't exist, you most probably not see/experience them even if things are happening right in front of you.

Choosing the Right Dog > How did your dog get his/her name?

Ashlyn

my mummy named me after much searching smile i'm her very first dog and therefore she wanted something perfect. she chose Roxy and Angel at first but the day before she got me, she saw a site with names and their meanings. Ashlyn means dream in Gaelic. and because I am her dream come true, she decided to put that name in consideration. when she saw me, she immediately decided that Ashlyn was a name that suited me. It was unique and I was her dream come true!
