Choosing the Right Dog > pitbulls are not bad dogs

| Barked: Mon Apr 2, '12 6:48pm PST | | | | | Until you've adopted and raised a Pit mix yourself, socialized it, trained it endlessly, and watched it nearly kill your two smaller dogs for absolutely no reason, maybe the point can never really be gotten across. That was genetics, and no one can tell me it wasn't.
Had to respond to this.
I adopted a pit mix a few years ago, when I first adopted him he did display some dog aggression but with proper training and handling he now lives peacefully with 4 other dogs, several foster dogs and puppies, cats, rabbits, and birds. And yes, he lives with a small dog, also a male.
My sister has 4 rescued pit mixes, the oldest she adopted 11 years ago. None of them have ever displayed any dog aggression, and they live with 3 chihuahuas.
I know some pits can have dog aggression, but that comment was taking it a little to far.

| Barked: Sat Dec 3, '11 7:40am PST | | | | | We don't live where this is happening but are still trying to pass it around for the dogs.
I have 3 of the breeds mentioned. Red is a APBT Mastiff cross, She She is a Chow, Sakari is a Husky, Hope would probably be labeled as a Chow mix because she has a spotted tongue. And Boozer would probably be labeled as a Shepherd mix due to his markings.
We had a talk with the shelter about why this was happened and they said that they have way to many of these breeds coming in and can not get them all adopted out so they are pursuing this ban. When I asked if it was fair to kill them all instead of giving some of them a chance they hung the phone up and I got no response.

| Barked: Fri Dec 2, '11 7:21am PST | | | | | Breed ban: please protest 72-hr.-kill proposal in Cumberland County Animal Control in Fayetteville, NC. Feel free to use the Sample Letter but please modify heavily as it is particularly long.
BACKGROUND
There is a breed ban set to go into affect Monday the 5th of December all Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pitbulls, Mastiffs (all bully breeds), Akitas and Huskies.
Cumberland County`s reason for this is they do not want to be held liable for these breeds and the possible problems with them after adoption from the shelter. A simple waiver should solve this.
We need to let them know that this is not the answer.
These dogs will be held for the mandatory 72 hrs and then will be killed, THEY WILL NOT BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO BE ADOPTED.
If the dog is an owner turn-in, he will be killed the second he walks into the back.

The shelter has stated they get to many of these breeds in and can't adopt them all out - so that makes it right to kill them all and not give any of them a chance?

| Barked: Sat Jun 18, '11 8:06am PST | | | | | I'm having to switch dog foods as the one I currently use is no longer being carrier locally - I can't afford the extra shipping cost and the extra expense of not getting a bulk discount. I will have to stay with my local feed store so I will get the bulk discount for rescue. The better foods they have available are :
Eagle Pack small & medium breed puppy
Merrick Whole Earth Farms
Pinnacle Holistic Chicken and Oatmeal
Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken puppy

Dog Laws & Legislation > Ethical or not?
Red
Just a big baby- ;)

| Barked: Thu Jun 2, '11 7:22am PST | | | | | Looking at the overpopulation of dogs especially the bully breed, reporting them would be a good move. That way all of the puppies AND the mother will be spayed/neutered - and this litter will not turn into thousands more.
After reading that the mom of the puppies is already grey this is not a reputable breeder OR responsible owner. Normally it takes a long time for a bully to grey - meaning most like that momma dog is old.
Nobody should be breeding an elderly dog.
The fact that they are selling these puppies for Around $1000 on a first come first serve basis raises flags - sorry but no dog ESPECIALLY a bully breed should be sold on a first come first serve basis.
I would report them.
Yes the shelters are over crowded but how over crowded will they be when this litter grows up and turns out more litters ?
