Advice on training and walking...

Hello everyone! My husband and I recently adopted an 8 month old Cattle Dog/Beagle mix. I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to share advice on training and getting the dog to know who the pack leaders are (we'd like it to be my husband and I). We have to keep Moses on a leash and I have had some trouble having him walk next to me rather than pulling ahead. He also can get nippy when he plays. We are trying to discipline him by saying "no" when he grabs something he shouldn't (i.e. a shoe or someone's shirt), but sometimes it seems like he doesn't want to listen. Anyways, we are somewhat new to this, so advice would be most welcome!
