I know borders and acds tend to like the water but I have not seen a whole lot of aussies playing at the beach. I tried it with mine at the lake last year he stood where the tide touched his paws, quickly steped back and then kept looking at me and back at my border collie- who was happily splashing around- like 'mom why is she in that wet stuff? Thats disgusting!' If I was drowning he would likely jump in but short of that I dont think anything would entice him. Hopefully someone has some tips on how introduce aussies to waterthinking

Aussies don't like to swim because they don't have a rudder (tail). Mine will swim a little if there are no other dogs to show him up and he's very hot. Go in with him.

Of my seven Aussies, only three really cared for water. My Frisbee dog was the best swimmer, he'd chase the Frisbee into the river in Austin, Texas. Using a toy that the dog really likes can help them overcome reluctance. But start slow..find a shore where the dog can wade in. Let him get used to the water and associate it with the positive experience of toy play. Then, after a few trips, increase the distance. You may have success getting him to swim.

My current Aussie loves the shore, but won't really swim. He wades until he's swimming, but that's as far as he goes. He likes to catch small waves and let them push him to shore and likes to lay in shallow water, though.

My experience is, don't expect your Aussie to be a swimming water dog!
