Doggie shoes for naked little paws...

I was talking to some AHT friends about the necessity of doggy shoes in winter or in rain or in general.

It took me a while to get Beanie used to them but once he'd recognized that he can walk with me outside without feeling the cold so much on his paws, he was happy as a clam with them.

I started my journey with the pretty looking ( yet for me unusable) Neoprene shoes with a hard rubber sole. They look more like little sneakers than the glove like kind that I used later on.
The problem is that the Neoprene is not sturdy enough and the sole is to hard, the foot will twist endlessly and ankle injury can occur.

When you choose the glove like kind with a thinner rubber/ plastic sole that little paw can still feel the ground and adjust to it, that;s not the case with the other kind. Make sure to fasten the shoes securely around the dogs ankle ( without cutting circulation off ) .

I started slowly in doors, first just the front ( lot's of treats while putting the shoes on ) then the back ( treats reinforced ) some steps, treats and the shoes came off. I did that for a couple of days and than we went to the park. It was rainy and Beanie didn't want to walk .
Finally some dog buddies came along and he had forgotten all about he's shoes, he just happily hopped along. The next day he was already used to the shoes and walked a little while with me.
Every day I went a little further until he was completely used to the shoes.

Good luck everybody !

I assume the glove kind is what Beanie is wearing in the picture on his page? Could you let us know what brand those are?

Thanks so much for posting this info.

... I don't know what brand they were, I bought them in the local Pet Shop. I hope I can track them down again because I'll need them next winter : )

I know the picture of him wearing them reminded me of the Muttlucks, which are available all over the place here in Ontario (not sure where everyone else is). You can buy them online if you're comfortable with that, just google muttlucks.

I've found the sneaker type ones Caillou will leave on longer, until he's distracted at which point he forgets about them completely.
Although he doesn't get long walks in them, I agree with you Uli about the ankle injury potential.
He's getting a pair of muttlucks for next winter, when he's full grown and not out growing his clothes at a ridiculous rate!
