Sammie

Cookie the- Cocker

I always thought that Cocker Spaniels were a little mean until I got my Sammie. He was kind of aggressive at first but now he loves people. He still hates the doorbell but once you're inside and he knows you're a safe person, he has to sniff and check you out and get all the petting he can get.

I got my first cocker in June 1993. Daisy's (a buff) original owners gave her up because she had seizures and they didn't want to mess with it. She was 2 at that time, for 10 1/2 years I religiously gave her meds for her seizures. She made me realize what an intelligent, loving, sweet dog cockers are.

She is the reason we decided to take Buster & Ziggy into our family, after she died.

The reason why I decided I wanted a Cocker Spaniel is because they seem pretty even tempered to me. They trained well (except for potty training I've realized) and were a good size, not too big or small. And now that I have Lady, I could never imagine my life without her. She is my little shadow. She is so loving and loyal to me, shes like my child. She is very smart and shes tries so hard to please me all the time. If I could only get her to learn to tell us when she has to go outside. I have tried every trick I can think of. She will hold it all day long when we arent home, but if were are, she will not hold it at all. Any tips would be appreciated.

We got our English Cocker Spaniel from some people that were getting a divorce and moving and could not keep her. She was 6mos at the time. She would escape from their yard somehow and come to our house, no sooner than we put her back in her yard she would escape and beat us back to our door. When her original owners had to give her up they chose us! We told them she made the choice for them.
We had been told the cockers are not the brightest bulb in the pack, but Dora is one smart cookie! She potty trained immediately (thank the potty gods), she can sit, kiss, sit pretty, roll over, turn around, shake with both paws, high five w/both paws, get her squeakies by name, get her leash and stay (for the most part) and right now she is learning a dance where she scoots on her belly and lifts her paw to a beat. We have to spell the words "Leash, walk and treat" if we don't want her to know what we are talking about. But she is learning what the spelling of leash is! We are gonna have to pick a code word pretty soon!
She hates the doorbell and will bark and go crazy when the UPS delivery guy show up. She actually starts barking long before the UPS truck comes (and it drives by 2 times a day!) and heaven help us if he actually stops to deliver something to mom which he does on a regular basis!
Dora actually chased the UPS truck down the street yesterday and the poor guy was stuck in the truck while my husband ran after her. She just wants to Race The Truck!
She will do anything her daddy says and literally is on his heals all the time. We are currently working on being able to leave her by herself with out her barking. She did okay yesterday for the 2 hours while we were gone with no barking!
We are absolutely in love with her. Dora only weighs 18 pounds and she is 2 years old. Is this weight normal for a cocker or an English Cocker?
Better go, she is pawing my leg and wants to go potty!

I am Mommy's first Cocker Spaniel. Mommy always had big dogs growing up, but when Daddy told her his friend's Cocker had just had puppies, Mommy wanted to go see us. We both fell in love!! Mommy says I'm a good girl and she couldn't picture her life without me now! Mommy also says I'm a very smart girl, but I'm on the stubborn side (Daddy says I take after my Mother). I can do tricks, but only when I feel like doing them!!

You bet I love cockers - especially MY CALI. I had a beautiful big buff boy - that was so loving and gentle - and when I lost him - i knew i would have another - but it did take time. I had a friend that had pups - and the mom was really sick - so the pups had to be bottle fed. They were so cute. Cali was solid black except for one spot on her ear. I had about the 4th pick of the liter - and hoped that she would not go in the first 3 rounds... AND she didn't - and what a pick she turned out to be. Beautiful AND great temperment. She was practically raise at school (I teach and coach) - so she had to adapt to different environments - and did so with ease!
I wouldn't pick any other dog - unless one NEEDED a home...

I love my cocker!!!

I love my Cocker!! Pepper has been literally my best friend... It drives all my friends and family mad but I don't care. I honestly don't know what I would do without her. Shes not always the friendliest but shes always trying to please me. and shes extremely protective. When I broke my ankle, She even growled at my mom (second fave after me) who was trying to help me up or get food or something. I was upset with her, but we knew then that she was going to take care of me and it was then that I realized that she was willing to do anything for me. I LOVE HER

I've basically grown up with my cocker, so I can't help but love them. My parents got Taci about 6 months after my brother was born, and I was 5. She's about 13 1/2 years now, and we're inseperable. smile They really do become your shadow, following you all over the house. I have to face the reality that she might not be with me much longer, and it's almost more than I can bear. Right now she's in pretty good health, but with old dogs that can change real fast. I'm savoring each day I get to spend with her, and when she finally does leave me I know she'll be in a better place. I love that dog, she'll always have a special place in my heart. smile

Cockers are amazing dogs, to put things very bluntly. My mother had a cocker named Lady (I think everyone's had a cocker named Lady...lol) when she was recently married to my da, but someone stole her so, a few years after I was born, we got one named Jasper. Well...we had him for a few years and then he decided to go make friends with a lady Cocker and, well, needless to say- he was never to be seen again by my eyes. We only got Freckles when we moved to Denton and she's been a joy. She's not my dog, persay, and is more attached to my mum than to me- just like Hallie's attached more to me than to my mum and da and such. Even still, Freckles is loyal and quite smart, if only on a strong stubborn side- she loves taking the ball and laying down with it on the cool tile and not bringing it back. -chuckle- she's such a wierd one. She just got a hair cut so she's looking very pretty right now with her patriotic bows and such... ^^

When mommy was a little girl, she and her family had a Cocker...after he died, her mum always said she wanted another...in the summer of 2001 she rescued Dixie - a white and buff cocker. When I came onto the scene in summer of 2006 it just made Cocker Love x2!! smile Mommy says she just loves the breed!
