They may also ask you "What tasks is the animal trained to provide for you?"

You have to be able to give credible responses to this question.

They may NOT ask you what your specific diagnosis is.

I have gone into stores and I remember this one specifically, Moxie was behaving beautifully she had her vest on and everything.

A woman came up told us to remove the dog, I said, "sorry ma'am she's a service dog, she goes where I go"

AND I KID YOU NOT

The woman looked at me and goes, "you don't look disabled!"

And my friend (bless her for having words, I was stunned) goes, "I'm sure in some country that's a compliment, but here in the US it's illegal to ask her why she needs this dog, so we'd like to speak to your manager please."

The manager apologized profusely.

You do need paperwork from a mental health provider if your dog is a psychiatric service dog (for anxiety etc) and not only that EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS do not have PUBLIC ACCESS RIGHTS!!!

So please I beg of you, do not put your yappy, spoiled, ill-behaved chihuahua in your purse and claim that you need it for "emotional support" and therefore it should be allowed EVERYWHERE, because you would just be making things harder on legitimate teams.

We have had some interesting things occur to us also. If you have a problem wiff a greeter to a store just ask fer the manager that usually takes care of things.

Now when we was in NYC last year just about no one ever asked why I was there. In one resturant the guy asked if we needed a table fer 3. He was including me. big grin

WRONG! You do not need to carry any paperwork fro a PSD, just like you don't have to have it for any other type of SD. (Except for on an airplane due to changes to the ACAA that are being appealed by a grassroots campaign led by the PSDS. (http://psychdog.org/comm_talkback.html) )

It is however helpful to have a Dr. note on file at home in case there were to be a legal challenge as to if you need the dog. This is not something to be carried with you.

If it is an ESA, paperwork can be required for housing and on a plane. OFC an ESA doesn't belong in any non pet friendly areas othewise.

I carry Moxie's with me anyways, being on campus and her being the first of her kind I have run into a lot of poeple who blatantly just don't know what a service dog is.

A security guard (hired by the state) followed us around the library the first times we went. He asked me where we would be, if Moxie was HOUSE TRAINED, and how long we would be staying. I had to almost file a report with public safety.

The other day we went to breakfast with a classmate and Moxie didn't have her vest, between moving back and forth from downtown I seem to have misplaced it. (what an idiot). Anyways i showed them her college issued ID and we sat down I went up to pay the bill and she did her stay at the table so I didn't have to make a huge production of it.

As we were leaving they all waved and commented, "if we hadn't seen her walk in we would not have known she was here!"

and that is the flip side of it, when your team gets the most amazing feed back. They thought that as soon as they brought over a cheeseburger and biscuits and gravy, she would instantly want some. But she didn't she laid calmly at my feet looking up at me every once in awhile, just as she is supposed to.

I do believe that having paperwork for an SD of any kind is good, even just reaching for it usually has people stop questioning.

I do carry it everywhere with me but have actually never been asked for it on an airplane.

My favorite with Moxie is going through airport security! She set it off once and FREAKED OUT. I felt really bad because they put her on the table and had to do the wand and I couldn't touch her. It really through her off.

So I taught her to do a sit stay and crawl through security (apparently if she goes too fast it doesn't work).

all the guards laugh when they see her and now when we fly out of charleston they wait for an audience they say "guys check out what this dog can do"

Moxie has been a poster for the university this summer as they are doing orientation I take as much time as possible to educate new freshman about Moxie.

Rambling lol. We'll post graduation pictures, I promise.

The only paperwork I carry with me is a laminated card with the ada and my state laws. I am in full compliance with my state law (which says ID card, but all my ID is is a pic of Odin, says ODIN Service Dog, and my first initial and last name as handler. (Handler comes out more professional than partner...semantics) and also says the name I train under at the top, it just sits in the clear pocket on his harness, I've yet to have to remove it.), therefore I can call the police to aid me in an access challenge after being kind enough to inform said gatekeeper politely of the laws. I have not had that severe of a challenge (just the basic you can't have a dog, it's a SD-oh..as I keep walking), but I will not whip out some random papers and let the gatekeeper think they can bully any SD team that tries to enter.
