Hi group. Sorry I have been absent for so long. And now I am asking for your prayers for my Lola. She has had progressive loss of balance and nystagmus (rapid eye movement) and is on a course of pred. to see if she will improve and if it is another immune disease. Although I don't think that in itself will tell a story since pred can appear to mask a lot of things. Lola has lupus (systemic immune disease) and I have been doing some research on her symptoms, which include mini seizure activity and lameness in one leg only, but stiffness in the back legs. The vet has suggested DM but I don't think it is that exactly. I am so afraid it may be immune mediated inflammatory brain disease. Without invasive diagnostics we may not be able to know exactly what it is. The diagnostic tests are dangerous in themselves and I have not found a good prognosis for any of the diseases I am looking at, nor has the vet suggested there is much that could be done for a brain disorder. We recently did a super-chem with Hemopet and everything looked good except the BUN was elevated and only needs rechecking in 3 mo.

I'm sorry I don't know what is going on with the other dogs on this list but I hope the pups are well. For the ones that aren't, my prayers go out to you.
Thanks, Gail and Lola (SLE)

Thanks to everyone who has kept Lola in their thoughts and offered her a prayer. We have an appointment with the U of Minn. on the 9th of July. That is the soonest they can get her in. I am keeping her on a low dose of prednisone in the meantime. Her leg is more lame and she has more unbalance or weakness in her rear legs. Appetite is great and she is still on patrol, so that is encouraging too. Nystagmus is less, but it is something that usually went along with playing ball and we aren't doing that now. One new symptom is severe shaking when she waits for her meals to be prepared. It is disturbing looking, not like a little dog would quiver because it was excited, more like uncontrolled movement. Goes away when she gets her food. Will post again when I know more. After we get at least some sort of diagnosis I will be taking her to a homeopathic vet.
Thanks again for the thoughts, Gail and Lola.

We went to Minneapolis yesterday with Lola to see the neurologist. He said it is most likely immune mediated inflammatory brain disease. Less likely is a brain tumor. She is starting cyclosporine tonight. She had a course of pred a couple of weeks ago and she didn't do well on it (side effects) so he thinks this is better. We opted out for the MRI since it will only show if she has a brain tumor. If she does, I would not let them do surgery since the prognosis is bad. I am hopeful that this drug will put her back into remission again, but we don't know. We don't know how much motor function she will regain either. But even if she doesn't regain any, she will have a meaningful, functional (somewhat diminished) and happy life. I hope you all have some prayers left over cuz we sure can use them here. Thank you everyone...Gail and Lola.

Good Luck Lola, I have been battling IMHA for 5 weeks and I know the ups and downs. Every time something gets better something else goes wrong.

If Lola's fighting that's the best you can ask for! We will keep you in our prayers.

I'm currently battling AIHA right now....just got admitted to the emergency clinic, awaiting a transfer to regular vet when it opens. It's been a tough road since this all started last Wednesday morning. I pray for Lola and all the other doggies with life-threatening diseases. I hope to beat this thing, but time will tell.
God Bless,
Miracle
