wave We all know the basic tricks (paw, beg, roll over etc.) Looking to see what other cool tricks pups can do. I've learned to do the army crawl (mom calls it the alligator crawl cause of the way my rear legs stick out). I'm a smart dog and love to learn new stuff. There is nothing I can't learn with clicker training.

Mom taught me "Be a gopher" using the clicker.

"Be a gopher" means I sit up straight on my back haunches with my paws hanging forward, just like a gopher does!

(I think some people call it "beg" or "sit pretty," too.)

To teach it, she just had me in a sit and lured me backwards a little with a treat, clicking and treating when I reached the "gopher" position, later adding the command and phasing out the lure.

I taught my guys to wipe their paws on the mat before coming back into the house!
So far they can only do their front paws, we're still working on getting the back ones. But for front paws, I taught it with paw-targeting objects on the floor but only clicking for when they got spastic and MISSED the object and smacked the floor instead! I've now sort of installed the paw wipe as their NILIF behavior for when they want to get let back in from the yard. They used to sit at the door, but now they wipe their paws on the mat when they want to come back in.

I taught Asher to jump through hoops and over things! I am teaching him how to weave through my legs! I taught Angel to put the ball IN my hand if she wants me to throw it (no treats, the reward is I throw the ball).

I like the idea of finding new, interesting things to teach them

Hey! You guys sound really talented. My mom was wondering if you wouldn't mind breaking down the steps. She can be a little slow at times BOL.

Wiping my feet boy would she really like me to do that... she always wipes my paws with a towel and just to let her know I don't care much for it I steal the towel after and put it in her bed BOLlaugh out loud

Weaving huh, I'm not so sure my mom is coordinated enough, but we'll give it a shot if you could guide her through it. Yeah I'm going to get more yummies and get smarter snoopy

Weaving is not hard, it just takes time. The first step is teaching a dog to target. Once the dog targets reliably, move the target so the dog has to continue moving to touch it.

Then spread your leg like you stopped in the middle of a big step and get the dog to go through you legs.

Once the dog has that down, try 2 steps (that's where we are now, I'll let you know how it goes!)

Asher,

Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to hear the rest. I have a silly question, but for some reason in all my research I never came upon targeting until recently. It is something that has been recommended for horses, but I haven't figured out how to get started with it. You would think with all the experience with clicker training i could figure this out. But for some reason this one has me stumped shrug would you mind explaining to me how you started and how you incorporate it?

I don't know how others do it, but I'll give a shot at it.

I would put my open hand side ways aside of the dogs face (maybe 3 inches away). Most dogs will turn their head to inverstigate. As soon as the dog turns toward your hand, click and reward.

Fine tune till you dog is touching your hand. Then, a bit at a time, increase the distance beween your dogs face and your hand so the dog has to move to touch.

You can also do this with a target stick.

Cookie does sit pretty, wave (left paw only right now and working on right paw), sit pretty and wave, paw and high five with right and left paw. I would like to teach her roll over but I don't know how frown We are working on spin right now and I think she will have that down soon.

Petey does all of the tricks Cookie does except for wave (we are working on it and making good progress). He also does "give me 10" and is great at catching his treats. Cookie and King catch their treats sometimes and sometimes they let them fall on their face or just watch them hit the floor laugh out loud

King does paw and high five with both paws and we are working on sit pretty. King is not much of a trick dog, he is super smart but not as food motivated as Cookie and Petey and although he wants the treat he seems to get bored and decides it isn't worth the effort. I am working on wave with him also.

I would like to learn how to teach roll over and the bang trick if anyone has some good ideassmile
