I would like to know how many of you can be trusted off leash?
As far as today none of my brother and I are trustable. We like to just get off so mom need to keep us secured into well fenced areas.
Only our foster brother is trustable offleash and he is 8 yrs old and cross with Border Collie.

Just when I think my girl is trustable, she proves me wrong. As far as I am concerned, a Pyr is never trustworthy off of leash. They just cannot help it. Their genetics make them wander farther and farther. A nice big fence is a great asset to any Pyr owner!

My foster mom say that the border collie in me make me more obedient toward offleash thing. I still like to wander far but I'm not very fast because I'm old so I can be somewhat trusted offleash!

I once read on a Pyr site that "an off leash pyr is a gone pyr" and truly take it to heart. Basher has never really been off leash and any time he does miraculously make it out the door he takes off down the street and I have to chase him with the car and lure him with "go for a ride".

Sometimes I take Jack out in the yard to potty late at night or really early in the morning when there is no traffic, but even then he's sometimes distracted by something and heads away from me. Lately I haven't been taking any chances because it seems like he was starting to figure out that he wasn't on leash and there fore didn't HAVE to listen, necessarily!

The only time I get to be off leash is at the doggie park. I always check on my mom to be sure she's not getting into any trouble, and when I'm ready to go, I simply walk by her toward the gate and before too long, here she comes with my leash. For some reason, she doesn't let me off leash anywhere else -- well, except for when she takes me to doggie day care, but that has a fence around it too, darn the luck. There are lots of places I would like to explore around there!

Bo is a master at making me regret letting her off-leash!! She fools me by heeling perfectly and then she starts to get "the trots" where she goes just a little faster than me until she gets into a full-on run, which at that point-she's gone!! I can't tell you how many times we've chased her down the creekbed after she's gotten on the scent of some wild creature!! As much as she'd like to be off-leash with Floyd (who is totally trustworthy), I know she'd be in the next county faster than I could catch up with her!!

just when i think i can trust zoey most, she takes off never to look back. i have even talked to the vet about having her hearing tested and he seems to think that she can hear just fine. he maintains that she has selective hearing and that she chooses not to acknowledge that i am running behind her begging her to come back! luckily, she has a huge fenced in yard and does not venture out often... only when mom is there to watch her.

My mommy lets me off leash when she walks my brother and me. So far I have proven trustworthy and this has been a lifesaver since our leashes were always getting tangled up before. Since I don't want to walk away from my family I stay very close-by.dog

hahaha! off leash pyrs??!! impossible. end of story. i've tried this while hiking and lola loves to tempt me into believing that she loves me enough to stay by my side. but deep down i know it's all lies!!

seriously though, these dogs have wanderlust in their blood. they want to explore and roam. i talked to a pyr owner with a farm and she said even her pyr roams off and he has over 50 acres to himself!

there was a really cute episode of breed all about it on animal planet that had a pyr who would wander off to the doggie spa every day! haha. they are great dogs, but unlike the typical loyal fido a pyr has a mind of his/her own. and that can be a dangerous thing - off leash!
