Hi all,

I was just wondering if there were many other pups who have a "pulling handicap?" Like I have hip displasia, but with all the exercise and my gluosamine supplements, it doesn't hurt me at all any more and I don't have to take Rimadyl any more, either.

I've also got a mysterious _something_ weird going on with my front legs....if I wear booties on my front feet, I can run and run and run. If I don't, I come up lame after just a mile or two. But there's nothing wrong that shows up on the x-rays, and it does not appear to be a paw pad problem, but rather something in my wrist, elbow, or shoulder. What do you all think? Weak tendons that are supported by the straps on the booties?

Perhaps this is crazy, but this is what I think. Dogs are very good at compensating for their weaknesses. My dog Jack had the head of his hip bone removed when he was one year old due to trauma. His other hip is completely out of the joint from arthritis. If you look at his page, and all photos were taken in the past two months, you will see that he is far from crippled. Although his hips are muscled, it is obvious that his shoulders are much more developed, and the vet confirmed that he has learned to compensate by carrying most of his weight on his front legs. If your dog is throwing most of his weight to his front legs, it may simply be hard on his feet and they get sore when they are unprotected. Just a thought.

My Sherwen is blind, and his seeing eye dog is Tyrone. Tyrone had an old injury to his hidnquarters before I got him and can't stand up straight, but with his glucosamine he absolutely loves to run in an older team.

Hey Max's Mom,
could it be some kind of allergy/irritation thing? Have you checked if he gets sore or cut or blistery between his toes? Not on the pads proper, rather on the sensitive skin deep between the toe pads.
Cheers, Pudden's Mom

Hi all!

Jammin' Lady, that is something I hadn't considered. Hmmm....it doesn' t *look* like he's driving with his front, but I'm not entirely sure I'd be able to tell.

He does not seem to have allergy problems, at least not that would make him come up lame. And he's only lame after running, not playing in the yard. He does lick at his front paws a bit more than our other two dogs, but I haven't seen any redness or irritation on either his pads or the webbing in between. And it's just his front.

It's definitely a mystery. Perhaps it will be revealed in time.

wierd...i got something for you pups though. i don't let anyone extend my hips(vet, mommy, No one) but when i lay down on the floor i stretch them straigh behind me. mommy had x-rays done and they're perfectly normal and i'm Really well muscled *gloats over his rippling muscles* the vet can't figure it out either. do you think i'm just being a jerk not letting them do it?

Hi Diesel!

Maybe you got hurt sometime in the past? My sis Katee is kind of like that, doesn't like anyone pulling on her hind legs. She pulled something (muscular, didn't show up on x-rays - has good hips) and ever since doesn't like having her hind legs messed with. She's ok with her front, though.

On another note, when I run, I wear down my hind paw's nails much faster than the front....does that mean anything? Like driving from the back instead of the front? Or is it maybe just due to the particular shape of my feet?

mommy has noticed a lt of dogs tend to wear down the back nails more so i'm guessing they run more in rear wheel than all wheel drive. mommy also has me on glucosamine supplement to keep my joints in tip top shape since i do weight pull and running. any one else get this stuff?

Hi all, just an update on my weird front leg problem.

Mom finally got up the courage to try just wrist-wraps for my front legs instead of a whole bootie....and it worked great! It was only for a two-mile run, and we'll do a few more short "test drives" with the wrist wraps, but it looks like this will work for me so I can RUN!!!

Well, ok, realistically, I can RUN!!! when it gets a little cooler. In the meantime I'll have to settle for just a run.....it's hot here!!!
