Looking at getting a berner. We have two other herding group dogs (a sheltie and an Aussie). Everything about these dogs looks great except for their life span. Wow 6-8 years! Is this true. How many of you have lost one of these dogs and at what age? Any info appreciated.

The average lifespan is true, unfortunately... we just helped a friend's berner to the rainbow bridge 2 weeks ago at age 4 1/2, due to larengyal paralysis and other neurological issues.

There are quite a few genetic issues and health problems that plague the breed, so please make sure you research and get your berner from a reputable breeder. The years of poor breeding have really done damage to the breed, as I am sure the same can be said for other breeds too... contact the BMDCA for help in locating one.

Even though they have a short lifespan, they are incredible dogs, and i wouldnt have anything else cloud 9
