Ruff! Raider here! I like short hair because its really nice to just run around and play in the cool summer or just for swimming! Its easier to walk around with shorter hair because well, I just think it is.

Thanks for reading!

During the winter I keep their coats long and brush them out at least three times a week. If you don't keep on top of it their coats will mat and you'll spend more time with scissors cutting the mats out. In late spring I clip my dogs using professsional Oster pet clippers. I found this takes a couple of hours for all three dogs. It also aclimates them to the clippers so they don't fuss. Hot short, cold long.

As you can see, LONG. This doesn't come without a price though. My hair is brushed twice daily, and a complete comb out after my evening brushing. My mommy has never had to touch my hair with thinning shears to break up a matt. It is tons of work, but it is worth it. However, I am going to do a show in October, and then mommy is going to shorten my top part of my body to blend with the bottom half. My legs will still be in columns, but the body will be shorter. I will still have to be brushed 2 times and combed, but just won't take as long. A little tip on the matts, when you have one that just won't come out, take thinning shears and go right through the matt a couple of times, and then brush the matt again. Taking scissors to a coat leaves a big hole. This will not do that.

I keep my fur in a studly puppy cut! My mom thought she wanted to keep my hair fairly long so I had to help her decide - I just love the "brush is a toy" game! I still have my fluffy tail and longer ears...but the rest had to go! I am way cooler and easier to keep clean! My mom says I look like Wilford Brimley now. I'm pretty lucky-I know if I would have been a girl I'd be sporting that pony tail! laugh out loud

All of our shih's have puppy cuts! Its such a hassle to keep the show coat nice and groomed, especially when there's five of them around. As it is, their ears get pretty matted so I can't imagine what the whole coat would look like! You've gotta brush every day...several times a day. And it seems as though the dogs are happier being able to run around and not get as hot. She wasn't a shih-tzu but Molly, the bearded collie, had a lovely long coat. My stepdad finally got her into a puppy cut and it took years off of her life! She was so much happier and more energetic!

I keep both of mine with the short puppy cut. Be prepared for alooooot of extra grooming if you let it grow out. I think I am going to let them grow out for winter, just to see what they look like. In the summer though, definatly keep them shorter that way they are cooler. Good Luckwave

Raven is kept in a very short cut in the summer and a longer cut in the winter. I keep Raven in a shorter cut because it's so much easier to manage and I don't have to deal with so many mats and tangles. big grin

Chloe is currently wearing a puppy cut with her face, head and tail long. This is probably going to be her signature style since her hair is sooo thick and will be hard for me to maintain. I just don't have the time to deal with it.
