Hi, I'm a new pomeranian owner. I've had Alaskan Malamutes and American Eskimos in the past, so this wasn't an issue for me before.

Joey Butters just got his rabies shot last week and the tag is HUGE. He hates it, but I've been hoping he would get used to it. Then today, he got it caught in the heating vent in our floor. One of his little feet was caught in there too when he tried to get himself out of it. He started shrieking and then my other dog and cat started going berserk. It was a bad situation that could have gotten ugly quick.

Thankfully this happened in the hallway right at the door to my home office and I was right there. (He hangs in my office while I work, so I don't crate him because I thought it was puppy proofed.) I was able to get his foot out and his collar off to free him from the vent. I haven't put his collar back on yet because I don't know what to do with that huge rabies tag.

Can I order a smaller replacement tag for the rabies tag? Does anyone put the tags on their pom's harness when walking instead of on the collar? (Joey wears a little collar around the house, but he wears a harness when we walk outside.)

I know he needs a tag on him in case he gets outside, but I can't have him wearing that massive tag he came home from the vet's with.

Hi! Your Pom is so adorable. Pomeranians have trachea issues and my breeder told me to never have him wear a collar, and I have read it in some books as well. My dog has all his tags on his harness when we go outside but he stays in the nude in my home. They can suffer from trachea collapse if they have a collar and it gets stuck!

I leave collars on my dogs all of the time just in case something happens that they get outside without my knowing.

I didn't bother to put the rabies tags on their collars, but the tags I had printed at Petsmart were a bit big for them, and I think they are still a little too big!

I've never heard of being able to order smaller rabies tags. Hopefully you can find a place!

Our vet gave Bentley a small rabies tag, and he always wears that and his tag with his name and address on it on his collar. I keep them on him for safety precautions, incase he ever did get out he would be able to get back to me. I never walk him on his collar only with a harness because poms can get a collapsed trachea. Bentley still chews at his tags of and on but hes getting more used to it. Maybe contact your vet and see if they can recommend how to get a smaller tag? Your Joey is adorable by the way big grin

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going to cross post this in the small dog forum as well to see if anyone has any solutions.

I was thinking about getting him a collar with one of those quick release clasps like cats have, just in case he ever gets stuck on anything again. It never really occurred to me to let him be nude at home. I guess I'm too afraid he could slip out the door and get away from me and then no one would know where he came from. But he is microchiped already.

He's wearing his harness pretty much all the time now. (It's so cute, it's like a Burberry plaid with a matching leash!) But I don't want it messing up his fur.

Mine go nude too because the tags pretty much drag on the ground. I also don't like what it does to their coats.

Instead I put the tags on their harnesses where the leash attaches.
