Lily I am perfectly aware of the sanitary trim, thanks..smile

This one was just crude-looking!! shock

A good sanitary trim to me is cleaning up around the genitals then clipping/scissoring a little round spot around the anus..NOT what looks like a reverse mohawk..shock laugh out loud red face

Oh well, lesson learned!!! wink

Toto--I speak to the groomer themselves, not a receptionist or assistant..wink

Taking all advice into consideration..
Didn't know how touchy the subject was..shock

Thanks again, everyone!! smile wave

Different groomers have different styles since there really is no one "style" of sanitary trims. Some just trim up area and some shave a strip. shrug Hope Frankie's bum doesn't bother him too much!

Thanks, Lily..
Like I said, this one just looked crude and the poor dog was miserable with it for days afterward...

Come to think of it, I think I am really gonna try and groom at home as much as possible...

As someone said on another post, it gets tiring trying to get what you want...

I know some groomers may see my dog and think what the heck...?
But you know, I often think the same thing when I leave the groomer's... silenced

I suppose when something gets too out of control I will try a groomer again,
but it is very frustrating...
not to mention it is not cheap...

I would have no problem and happily tip a groomer even better than I already do if I could just once leave 100% happy...

But, after almost a year of grooming, and that not being achieved, I think it is just time to take htings in to my own hands...

It may not look perfeect, but, neither do the prefessional grooming jobs...
Seems every time not only is the overall look not achieved, but something is always crooked or uneven...

Maybe it is a sign I am just to do it at home..wink

Thanks everyone...
I do appreciate all the input..
But it just gets me more frustrated than anything...:sigh:

But right now, and maybe I am just having a bad day and and am being cranky, but right now I am just very frustrated and really not willing to give yet another groomer or even one of the same groomers yet another try....frown
FWIW, I have been to three of the four groomers more than once (the same girl at Petco twice) and it just never 'clicks'...The fourth one was the one time I did call to have something corrected and was not given an option to have the problem corrected..so you can see why I am all the more hesitant...

It may be mis-communication, and likely that is a big part, but that is what makes it all the more frustrating...

I think it might be time to save myself the aggravation and put the Wahls and the Andis to use...

Thanks again...smile

As a groomer of over 40 years, I have NEVER seen anyone shave from the anus to the penis and call it a sanitary groom... new one on me!! And, what Frankie is describing sounds like it was shaved WAY, WAY too short.
We trim around the rectum with scissors, and also trim the hair around the tip of the penis, again with scissors and not to the skin... that is guaranteed to get a dog licking and ending up with razor burn/hot spots, IMO.
Also, if the tip of the penis is shaved too close, urine will end up on their bellies. We always leave a 1/2 to 3/4 inch length of hair to "wick it" away. (I don't know if I can say this here, suffice it to say we leave some hair as a wick. You can guess what it's called!)laugh out loud

Frankie, just read your last post. Frankly, (sorry, couldn't resist using that word, LOL), Petco and those chains get groomers right out of school, hopefully, they've been to school! As soon as they get some experience, they leave to go on their own. I would search out someone who breeds groomed breeds and shows them and has been grooming for more than a few years... they are much more likely to understand what you are trying to achieve and make sure you end up with it. They are probably going to cost less as well without the major overhead of a chain store.

Frankie's Mom...
I feel your painshock Here is what I would do in your situation. Choose the groomer that you liked best...personality-wise. Then develop a relationship with them. I did this with my groomer for Keeva and what a doll. Did she groom her exactly the way I wanted.....yes and no. I told her to do what she felt Keeva needed since I am not a groomer and she is my first pup. Next time I go in I know there wil be certain small things that I want done differently and will tell her. I think if you stay with one that you feel good about then things will get easier. They get to know your pup and what you want. I always give her a good tip too. I do bathe her myself when she digs in the yard but I never get her as white or as fresh smelling as the groomer. Good lucksmile

However, I was at my show handlers once and one of his groomers was sending a dog home. It had been shaved CLOSE!!! And, it had clipper tracks all down the entire body, hair that was at least a quarter inch longer. There is no way, no how that dog would have left here looking like that!!!
I will say, the way my handler (owner of the shop and a veteran breeder of poodles!) was looking at that dog, I am sure that girl got lined out for it!!!

I have heard some groomers would shave a line for a sanitary groom but I didn't say they were good groomers. laugh out loud

Keeva, that make sense, and that is kind of what I was going for with the one groomer, but she ovebooks herself to the point I am sure it is hard to remember one dog from the next an which one gets what..She is the one the dog spent 6.5 hrs at..I do not mind the length of time needed if what I wnted is achieved--I know many work on multiple dogs at a time, and it benefit the dog as well to give the dog a bt of a break, so to speak..

But she always seems to busy and so hairied (no pun intended! lol laugh out loud ) that it seems she gets a bit frazzled and forgets things...

My main points are NO STRIP like described for the sanitary, the mustache not left so long that food gets trapped easily, and getting the hair out of the eyes as much as possible as it grows fast..and not shaving on the insides of the hindquarters..I know a lot of groomers seem to do this, but it drives Frankie nuts an also looks ridiculous on him...frown

Also an even haircut would be nice.
I can't tell you how many times the face looks uneven. frown
This last time, the ears were terrible.
So bad that my friend's husband asked if they bobbed the one ear..shock
I decided to let it go and not take the dog back because I do not want both ears to look bobbed..hopefully, as his hair seems to grow fast, it will just grown in and fill in fast...But of course, when you want it to grow fast, it seems to take it's sweet old time....puppy

I am finding that the groomrs around here all seem to have set ways of grooning, and even hen asked for specifics, still do what they want anyway.

How many times can you go back and *hope* they listen to you...?
It is evident they are cookie-cutter groomers, so that is discouraging...

Like I said, it looks like I am going to opt to groom Frankie as much as possible at home and only take him to the groomer when matts or something get out of control...

Not really my choice or preference, but I am now super gun-shy about any groomer...confused

Thank you all for your input..smile

My original question has been answered..smile

Thanks again!! wave

I'm a groomer too and the responses posted here are great ones.

Uh believe me, when your longhaired dog has crap stuck to their but and stinks of urine soaked into the fur back there you'll like the sanitary trim.

Also -never- use the words "puppy cut" there are 1001 different meanings of those words among groomer,s breeds etc.

try to avoid phrases like "a littler shorter" there are difference in the word "little" Try to use words like 1/2 the length, 1/4 etc.

Unless the photos you bring in are of the same breed/size mix of your dog. They aren't going to help at all. Someone brought in a photo of a Champion Bichon Frise winning a dog show, and wanted their malti-poo groomed that way. Nope, it doesn't work that way. They were actually surprised when their mixed breed didn't turn out like the BIS winning Bichon.

if you want the moustach shorter, tell your groomer when you pick him up. its a lot easier to cut hair off, its a lot harder to put it back on. They should be able and willing to take him back there for a few more mins and shorten the beard for you.

Yes the sanitary trim is great and very necessary...when it is done correctly!

wink

Thanks Ch for your reply..I do do all of what you say...
For whatever reason, there is a total miscommunication or understanding problem or a forgetting problem...

I just have not had luck and will be doing it myself...Given the grooming expriences I have had, it can't be much worse, and I have done some trims in between and liked my work much better..

Not knocking the grooming world--but a good groomer is VERY hard to find!

Thank you all for your replies..smile
