I went to buy more dog food for Cookie and all the TOTW is off the shelf due to recall. What am I going to do now? I dont want to get him something new and risk him getting sick. I wont be able to introduce a new food slowly. How should I handle this??

Cookie- Right now I would be much more concerned about the risk of illness due to the recalled food. Tom was on Chicken Soup for the Soul until this morning, when I learned it was involved in the recall. I immediately took him off, threw the almost entire bag of food away, and switched him to Orijen. Yes, you may experience some diarrhea switching straight over to a new food, but I'll take that any day over salmonella poisoning.

Coookie, you should start by recognizing that there are problems with feeding any food that's made in a plant that's been shut down for salmonella contamination. I know it can be scary to have to change foods unexpectedly, but the food could have made both dog and human sick.

Some alternatives are Acana, Fromm, Merrick, Buffalo Blue, Earthborn, Solid Gold, and Nature's Variety, if you want to stick with kibble. Most of these companies will be happy to send you samples so you can see how Cookie reacts to them.

His TOTW food is almost gone (probably 1.5 cups left), so I doubt this bag was contaminated. I heard the Earthborn bison flavor(orange bag) is very similar to TOTW HIgh Prarie. Is it just as good qualtiy? Anyone know?

Yes, the Earthborn is a good substitute for TotW, in quality and formula.

I think Earthborn and Nature's Variety are pretty comparable to TOTW. I just bought a bag of Earthborn myself (instead of TOTW) and can't wait to crack it open. If you go to the Earthborn website, and sign up for their newsletter they will send you a $3 coupon. TOTW hasn't been pulled from my stores because their particular shipment wasn't affected, but I'm pretty miffed at Diamond right now and decided to go with something else.

The place I buy dog food highly recommends Fromm, Precise, Pulsar (by Horizon), and HiTek Naturals. I am switching over to Fromm now and a couple of my dogs are digging through the TOTW to get the Fromm.

I agree with Maggie, From has 4 different flavors of grin free kibble now, and the kibble size is better than TOTw anyway if you have tiny dogs. The kibble size on Fromm is identical to "solid gold just a wee bit". Also, DOra solid gold is a diamond product so I wouldn't trust it right now. and solid gold is not grain free Anyway. I would also reccomend nature's variety instinct and Nutrisca. Stay away from California Naturals.

Acana is a good choice. If Cookie likes it and does well, I'd stick with it.
