I could get to the states to see which county had bans, but I couldn't get through on the link to see what breeds each county had banned confused. I am dying to know which state, in its great wisdom, banned the pug??? laugh out loud Did someone get their ankles mauled???? Or, maybe it was someone's lap that was torn to pieces laugh out loud ??? I knew my GSD was banned in someplaces, but my PUG???? laugh out loud I think who ever introduced that bill deserves some award for stupidity!!! I think all BSL is bogus, but banning a pug is making me LMAO!! This is going to keep me in chuckles all day. If anyone knows in what state they are banned please let me know. I think I will send a letter off to the editor.laugh out loud

This is a very interesting link that breaks down dog attacks by fatality and or maiming. You will note that there are a few fatalities that were caused by the dog accidently choking or smothering a child with the leash, a chain and in one case the child's scarf.
It's also interesting that Dogo Argentino's are listed on the 75 "bad" breeds yet are not listed on this document at all (mind you in all fairness to pits, most people mistake Dogo's for white pit bulls). The document was compiled by Animal People from news reports between 1986 and 2006.

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog Attacks 1982 to 2006 Clifton.pdf

I am not sure if I have much faith in these numbers, it lists one attack by a pug-rottweiler mix! Can you really cross a pug and a rottweiler?

The list is for information only.. To make people aware that there are so very many breeds of dogs that are banned, restricted.. Or are now or have been considered..Some of the breeds do not exsist anymore.A small Iowa town has a ban on dogs "over 100 pounds ",can be any large dog so they can't be listed.. I have known Labs and Boxers over 100 pounds while some of the larger but more slender breeds might only be 99
pounds.. ( does their dog warden carry a scale) also goes to show how
silly such a law is..

I saw one of the cities was proposing a ban on all dogs over 15 pounds. That's just silly. Maybe that's where the pug ban comes in? shrug

I noticed that some states have laws banning the localities from passing BSL, yet they still have BSL in some counties. Don't these people know that state law trumps county and city law. So, if the state says no BSL...they can't ban a breed and their ordience won't stand up in court. Here's what we need...a constitutional amendment banning all BSL. Because Federal law trumps all, all BSLs anywhere in the country would be gone!

Bear,
I just dont' see how on earth they can be viscious. I can understand the owner and the lack of trinaing that may have caused the breed to be seen in a red light, but Mariah is the dumbest animal I know! I KNOW for a fact that she will never be viscious. What about Pomeranians? I've seen more Poms attack small children than Eskies!
I am in no way saying that certain breeds should be banned over others, mind you, I'm just a little baffled that some of them (if not most- or all) are on this stupid list.
Animals are getting the shaft here.

We allow mentally ill/"dangerous" humans around other humans. Some jerk around uncontrolably and have to be restrained with wrist and ankle straps because they can be violent and can seriously hurt someone (I had a numerous shildren in school with me in my childhood who were in this position). Some are biters, and can seriously hurt someone who gets to close to their face, yet we allow them to be seen in public and go to public schools and parks. They always need supervision, and cannot be left alone for their entire lives. Society would FREAK if we voted in favor of a law that made it mandatory for those kinds of people to be kept at home or away from other people. This is the same kind of indignation I feel for our animals. Humans cannot hold up the same standards for dangerous humans as they do for dangerous animals.

This whole thing is stupid.

I find this list pretty hard to believe. Where is the proof that this is correct information rather than some scare tactics?

So I'm guessing that the people who put these kinds of bans in place would just rather that no one anywhere have any dogs of any kind. I mean, really. Labs? They're the most popular dog in the U.S. How could any community ban them with good conscious?

These 'dog banners' are the same people who put no-tolerance laws into effect in schools to catch those vicious students who bring a knife to school to cut a birthday cake or the same people as book banners--saving you from original thought every day!

You can't save everyone from everything--especially with laws. It's about responsibility. Taking responsibility for yourself, your kids, your dogs, your property, your actions. If the world had a little more of that, then we wouldn't need so many laws. And we certainly wouldn't need so many Animal Control Officers out there trying to catch the people who abuse their animals and let those animals get blamed for their actions.

Grrr!

VA law is so confusing. It reads in a way that makes it seem they want to protect dogs for hunting. I have seen how some folks keep there hunting dogs in our county (you can see the pins and tie outs from the main roads) and it is not good. I guess at least the upside is for now, Katie won't make the BSL in VA. And according to the law, if I get a second dog that she decides to beat up she isn't even dangerous-but if she does that to my neighbors dog she isthinking I don't get why it is ok for my dog to attack another dog I own, but not anyone elses-shouldn't that be bad period? But like I said in VA-lots of folks who have dogs for hunting have packs of 5 and up and can have aggression issues. There is one in our area who has 17 dogs tied out to seperate houses on maybe 5-6 ft of chain-I counted houses once. But they have shelter, food and water so no one will step in. Sad that people think of their dogs as equipment like a gun or duck decoy that only needs attention when in the field.
