My mom's Pomeranian snagged his nail on something last week and tore it. The quik bled a bit.

My mom's just been putting neosporin on it and a fresh bandage on it daily.. he doesn't seem to be in pain, has been running around and play normally and paying no attention to the bandage.

It still looks pretty gruesome though. The nail is attached, but barely and is split to the base.

What could a vet do for it if we took him in? What will happen if he doesn't go? Will the nail just fall off and a new one will grow?

You really should remove the broken nail... that is basically what a vet would do, however, usually you can quickly pull it off. Vet would also probably prescribe antibiotics, but if it looks good it is probably overkill. If the nail is not removed it will keep catching on everything and hurt like crazy!!!!

Two of our dogs have broken nails before. The vet did exactly what your mom has done - antibiotic ointment and bandages for a week or two.

One dog's nail was broken totally off at the quick. It bled a lot and took a long time to grow back, but it did. The other dog just broke the nail partially off. The vet thought it would be too painful to remove it until it had grown out some, so she wrapped it well enough that the bandage would last a week, let it grow out a bit, the cut it off later. The main part was keeping in wrapped and cushioned enough that the nail didn't get caught on anything and torn worse.

Thank you.. he was really licking at it this morning, and when we took the bandage off we saw that the nail did fall off.

Now all that's left is a tiny pink stub (the quik I imagine). An exposed nerve.. that's gotta hurt!

It must be really bothering him now because he didn't want to eat this morning and he really wants to lick it (put some bitter apple spray on it though). When distracted, he's fine and will play, but when his mind is free, all he's thinking about is his paw. Do you think he needs some painkillers?
