Fentanyl/ Metacam side effects???

Jack had surgery to repair his bilateral luxating patellas on Wednesday. I picked him up yesterday, and was told to leave his fentanyl patch on until Sunday, and to give him .4ml of metacam once per day, which I did this morning.

About 10 minutes ago, Jack started shaking and looking into the middle distance. He does this when there's a storm, but he did it worse than he's ever done with a storm, and it's not storming out! He was just kind of zoned out.

Could it be from the medicine? It's not listed as a metacam side effect. From pain? He snapped out of it. It was a strange episode. Parker had his fixed in Jan of 06 and never had an episode like that.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Molly had a bad reaction to the Fentanyl, too. She whined & fussed continuously from the time it was on until I took it off several hours later. She acted like she was in pain, and I finally said "enough", pulled the patch & put a cool wash cloth on the site where the patch was. She relaxed and went to sleep almost instantly when I did that.

The vet thought it was just a reaction to the heavy meds in her system, but I think the patch was causing a burning sensation.

I just had my first and last fentenyl patch in July when I got my amputation.

I whined and shook and acted like I was in horrible pain. Every exhale was a whine.

I was taken off my NSAID at the same time... They said to take them both could cause a bad interaction.

Please call your vet. Taking the patch off is very tricky. You don't want it to touch your skin. It did my Mommy's and she got kinda sick.

Metacam is, like Rimadyl, an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and carries the same potential for adverse reactions as does Rimadyl. Rimadyl is responsible for the deaths of thousands of dogs. (The FDA's database on Rimadyl is now up to 22,000 reported cases of adverse reactions.)

What we've seen with Rimadyl shows that dogs are very individual in their types of adverse reactions to the drug, so just because your dog's particular symptoms are not listed on Metacam's info sheet, do not ignore the warning signs your dog is displaying. All sources say to remove the dog from the drug immediately at the sign of ANY adverse reactions. Staring into space/catatonia are signs of shock which often accompanies internal bleeding or hemorraghing - which is a well-known and potentially fatal adverse reaction to COX-2 inhibitors (NSAIDS) like Rimadyl, Etogesic, Metacam.

And be prepared for your vet to dismiss your concerns. Nearly every vet we've seen who has prescribed an NSAID for our dogs at one time or another has treated us dismissively and with condescension because of our concerns and refusal to treat our dogs with such drugs. Big pharma has most vets very well brainwashed that NSAIDs are the next best thing since sliced cheese. Our reaction to these vets is to just walk out of their office and never look back. By the way, we lost one of our dogs, G'kar, to Rimadyl poisoning which is why we are now somewhat evangelistic when it comes to preaching against these drugs.

Here are a couple links with more info on the dangers of NSAIDs for dogs:

I use metacam to take the edge of from the pain in my back. I was on .3 which was fine for a while, until I started throwing up. Now my dosage is .2 and it seems to be working fine for me.

Metacam is much safer than Rimadyl (which I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot poll). We aren't seeing near the side effects or severity. Most drugs have side effects, some will have them and some will not. I used Metacam on Lily with her spay with out hesitation. Dogs who have less pain after surgery heal faster. The Fentanyl is a strong narcotic, just like if you took a strong narcotic it may make you act a little funny. It is for big pain and I've seen it used a good deal in a specailty practice I worked in. Some dogs reacted badly, others not at all. Typically animals seem to tolerate it better than humans, makes alot of us pukey! cry I think it would be worth the chance of using it. If you need to remove it before it's time just slap on a rubber glove before you pull it off if you are worried. Did your doc tell you to use them both together or use the Fent patch now and the metacam after?
