I have carpet treads on my wooden stairs. They really help my dogs keep control on the steps. I originally installed them when my previous Rott was getting older and having traction problems. Have you tried leading him up and down the stairs on a leash with treats?

Miss Ashley was afraid of stairs too and at 2yrs of age we got another Shih Tzu puppy which i thought would help to get her going but it didn't. We finally got a personal dog trainer to come to the house and work with her and within 1 minute she had AShley going up and down stairs!!!!!! The trainer put a leash on her and simply walked up the stairs with her. It was amazing thats all she did. The trainer said you had to walk with her and show her you have confidence in her ability to do the job. It took a couple of days doing this with her and after that is was going up and down by herself and now chases brother Bentley.

Hope this help, good lucksnoopy

smileHello, sorry I don't have too much time to read all of these responses, so please excuse me if I'm just repeating someone....
I can relate to this experience, I have a really...shall we say "clingy" dog named Sunny. He follows me everywhere--and I mean everywhere. But there was a while when he wouldn't follow me down (or up, if I brought him down) to the basement. One day after I made it all the way to the top and he was just at the bottom, staring at me, even whimpering, I was like, "This is crazy!".
SO-all I did was talked him through it FROM THE TOP of the stairs. Once he realized I wasn't coming to rescue him, he'd attempt to go up 2 steps and then get scared and hop back down, this went on for a solid 3-4 minutes....then I went and grabbed the bag of Pupperonis. I went down a couple stairs myself, just so I was still out of his reach, but close enough for him to smell the treat and be closer to me. I kept being encouraging, "C'mon, baby, c'mon Sunny" and before I knew it he'd be closer to my hand. I rewarded him with the treat and a "Good boy!" and backed up a step and repeated the process until he was at the top! It was a breakthrough!
Now, he still doesn't really follow me down the stairs, but I know that if I take him down, he's not as scared to follow me back up.
Come to think of it, when I first got him he wouldn't even use the upstairs steps to go up to my room....I guess I was going up and down SO frequently (compared to the basement) that he just had to give in...Good Luck! cheer

Thank you everyone your advice is so great, and helpful. I've tried the leash and while he is such a good follower outside he plops down at the bottom of the stairs. I tried to lead him while my husband has the back end laugh out loud Although he is such a people pleser there are times he wont budge. So treats seem to work better. The funny thing is when I get to the halfway mark now he cranes his neck to get the cheese. Now Annie and Charley are constantly licking and sniffing the magic stairs waiting for cheese to appear... I have thought about calling in a trainer. When we took Bo to obidience classes he got pretty distracted, all those fun puppies. I was going to post and see what success other pups had with that. Since we have three large dogs now I thought it might be time to call in the professionals. laugh out loud We just need help with the stairs, Bos' new excitment barking and walking three dogs on a leash at the same time. Although each dog enjoys their mommy and me time during our morning walks, mommy still has to do things for her human kids..

My Murphy will not go down the stairs to the basement. We have two homes and he will not go down to the basement at either place. We have stairs going to the second story in both homes and he will go up and down them. Just not to the basements.

Paddy--now a 4 year old Jack Russell/Foxie had a problem with the stairs at our holiday unit. Home only has 4 stairs leading to his yard which never caused any problem--was able to negotiate them from a pup. However the flight of concrete stairs upto the holiday unit was a different story---Like Bo I think it was the fear factor & initially not knowing where they lead --also we would only visit about once a month.Anyway we tried everything that you have tried--initially carrying him up the stairs when he was a pup but as he got older he would stand his ground.Treats & lots of praise seemed to work the best-placing a treat on the step just out of reach--again he would go no further--he would sit & whine yet wagging his tail.We tried off leash & on leash still with not much success until he was 3 years old & one day he just ran up the stairs with me --at last he had conquered his Everest. That day he kept running up & down several times. I think consistency --praise & maturity in the dog will overcome the fear of the stairs Keep trying & Good Luck. (Becuse Paddy has short legs he finds it easier to run up stairs so he has to gather his momentum)

Thank you Max and Paddy at least I know we are not alone smile There might be hope for him yet. I think the pads are helping, but we are taking it slow. Bo does the same thing Paddy does maybe they are related...
