I wrote this last night for a group I am in who is sharing the grief of saying goodby to a friend. How lucky we all are to have had both Duncan and his mom Sybil in our lives and been able to call them friends. As we join together in sorrow, let's remember the joy they brought to us as well.
It's Sunday night and I sit at the computer as the day darkens into night. I have been sobbing for hours at the loss of a little white dog named Duncan who lives in Las Vegas and somehow got out of his gated yard and was found drown in his neighbors pool.
Duncan was one of Willie's first friends. He was the Ring Bearer at Willie's wedding. Willie and he shared holidays although Duncan and Willie were of different faiths. Duncan's page was always a delightful array of fun pictures and events and his mom, Sybil and I became fast friends.
I think of her tonight as she grieves for her little man. She loved him so and he was so much a part of her everyday life.
Why something so cruel would happen to her, I have no answer. I just pray she is somehow able to heal her heart in the days ahead.
Why do we learn to love these little pals of our animals so much although we haven't even met? Why do we grieve as if they were are own? Why are we heartsick at saying goodby to "strangers"?
It's because they are no longer strangers and have come into our hearts thru forums, pmails, pictures and words.
Is it worth the heartache? Oh yes. Even though I feel as if I just lost a member of my own family, I have shared the love and friendship of having little Duncan in my life so it's only appropriate that I also share the grief of saying goodby.
Darling, little man. I wish you Godspeed. I know that Willie will be met with loving paws when it's his time to go. We will not forget you, sweet boy. You have a very special place in our hearts.
Sybil, somehow know how we grieve for you and pray your heart heals in the days ahead. You are such a loving and kind friend to all.
Godspeed, Duncan - A very special Angel
