Hello! Pepper's humom chiming in today.
Pepper loves her ball fetching. But not so much that she is aggressive about it. She's had some encounters with some not so friendly dogs, but nothing major. Just think she's decided balls and frisbees are safer and more predictable than other dogaloos. So her preference at the dog park is to focus on her fetching and mostly she ignores the other dogs. She is a favorite of the herding dogs. They love to herd her. And she's good with it too. Doesn't mind as long as they don't get in the way of her fetch. If there is a very pushy dog she stops running, drops her ball, lowers her head and lets them sniff her. Most dogs are satisfied and soon let her go on her way. She has never challenged another dog until this week.
There was a swiss mountain dog giving her a bit of a hard time. He'd let her get the ball but then not allow her to bring it on back. This went on a few times until she finally told him off! Her tail was wagging and anyone else would've thought she was playing with him. But I knew better. Pepper doesn't puppy play anymore. For the first time Pepper decided to stand up for herself. Think the reason is this swiss mountain dog is a puppy. Although he is about 3 times her size! She's finally figured out she's not a lowly puppy herself anymore. She will never be alpha dog. But she's confident and happy, so she shouldn't be omega dog either. I'm glad she was a little assertive. Although, the swiss pup was pretty much unfazed.
The other new development is Pepper is now willing to voluntarily leave the dog park. I used to have to hide the leash and sneak up on her. It seemed she was never ready to go. The other day while I was going to get the leash off the hook near the gate she followed me over and stood at the gate ready to leave! I was pleasantly surprised.
I think both incidents are signs that she is shedding her puppyhood. This is good but makes me feel a little meloncholy as well. My friendly, excitable puppy has become a sweet, good natured dog.

Aw, they grow up so fast! I remember the first time Hershey decided he wasn't going in his crate when I was leaving the house. And the first time he opted out of accompanying me to the laundry room. It happens like that a lot. One day it's this way, and the next day it just...isn't any more. Pepper is a wonderfurl dog!
I still sometimes act like a puppy. BOL! I'll never grow up!
Growing up can be 'bittersweet' in some ways...enjoy each day as they come with their own set of highlights!
