Acting like he wants to go outside in order to steal your space on the couch, Group Howling, Howling,

On 20 October, 2004 I lost the canine love of my life, my heart hound, Irish Wolfhound, Murphey. He was nine and a half years old in a breed that normally lives six to eight. He was the equivalent of a one hundred year old man. So I guess he had the right to be crotchety at times, and nudgingly needy of scruffles at others. Even after five years of a diagnosed heart problem he still found the good things in life more interesting than his erratic and failing heartbeat. As each of four new puppies found their way into and around our lives, he regained the vigor of his youth and though all the other dogs respected his Alpha Position too much to approach him playfully, he still would toss their toys up in the air and catch them in his mouth like a little puppy. And though he almost always exerted his Alpha Authority on Sophie, my four year old wolfhound, he often let her eat out the same food dish with him. And in the last of his days on earth, even with several heart episodes a day, he never cried out, whimpered or showed anything more than surprise that his heart wasn't cooperating. And at last, when his too love-filled heart couldn't recover from yet another episode, he slipped away quietly -- to my dreams, to my memories, and all too often, too my tear filled eyes, looking for someone that will never be there again.
