There have been several comments left on Coco’s diary regarding my decision to no longer allow either Coco or Puff up on the furniture. Let me tell you why I made this decision.
Late Thursday night when I got home from work I noticed Puff was walking “funny”. Closer examination revealed he was dragging his left rear leg. His foot was against the floor and the pads were facing upward. Puff was unable to control any movement on this leg. He was falling down and essentially could not walk.
Friday morning there was no change in his condition so he was taken to the vet and she concluded he might have a pulled muscle or have a spinal injury. The vet chose to give Puff a steroid shot to help reduce any swelling that he might have and to give him a course of steroid pills even though they are not recommended for dogs with liver problems, but at this time there was no other alternative.
By Saturday morning Puff had regained about 90% use of his leg – THANK GOD!!!! The vet was encouraged with the progress Puff had made in the 24 hour period but stressed that he is not out of the woods as of yet. She feels that Puff probably has a slipped disk since the shot helped him so much however the real test will come when Puff is off of the steroids as the swelling might come back and he might be in terrible pain. She is not very optimistic in regards to Puff making a full recovery but he is not as bad as it was on Thursday so I am happy for what we have.
How Puff hurt himself we don’t know. Puff has always walked “funny”. His hind legs were stiff and he was always struggling to climb the doggy stairs that allowed him to get up on the daybed. As of right now, Puff can not lift his hind left leg even two inches off the ground. He is stumbling as he walks and has no control of his left rear leg when he tries to turn, but he can walk so that is great news.
As a safety precaution I have decided that neither dog will be allow on the daybed or any other piece of furniture so that they will not hurt themselves. If Puff jumps down from something he can further damage his spine so I must keep him at floor level at all times.
Puff seems to be handling this very well although he is being kept in the dreaded crate during the day while I am at work in order to give his spine a chance to heal. Coco on the other hand is having a complete hissy fit in regards to not being allowed on the daybed but that’s Coco for you - LOL
Sorry to hear about your back and leg little buddy. Your mom has your best interests in mind so please listen to her. Best wishes for a complete recovery!
We hope your leg is better soon!!! *hugs* :o)
We knew there must be a good reason you and Coco were being banned from the furniture because we know your humans are good to you and Coco, but to us dogs, it sounds like the nutrition lecture Mommy gave me when I was begging for candy. All I heard was blah, blah, blah blah because I was busy trying to find a way to get to the candy.HA I am sorry that you were in pain, and I hope you continue to heal. It isn't worth getting on the furniture if you could get hurt.
Puff, take it from me - momma knows best. You must heal and get well so you can terrorize Coco Rose.
Your momma loves you and Coco and she's doing the best thing for you. Give it time, and maybe she'll buy you a little short daybed.

We love you Puff Daddy!! Keep getting better!! Sending POTP and prayers your way buddy!!

PS - Angel Roman and Logan Ben say it isn't time for you yet...
My mom actually bought me two small ottomans. She took the feet off so they rested flat on the floor. One was placed in front of "my" couch, and one next to "my" daybed... it made a nice step and no more jumping or sprained paws. The Chicago Crew's Black Pearl Dogs use one of them to get in and out of the Jeep when it's parked in the garage.
But, we love you too, too much and are glad your momma is watching out for you!
Finkin' 'bout yu wif WOTZA wuf an' pwayers, sweet Puff!!
I miss ONE diary entry and you hurt your spine!
*Smacks paw on face*
That's it I'm reading your diary every day, right away!
I'd come massage you, but might hurt you cause my paws are so big...
POTP, little buddy!
Josh, worrying about you
