A new Snow Pic!

Well Dogster, it appears that for the first time in 63 years, Charlotte, North Carolina has seen a WHITE CHRISTMAS! Of course, Mama and I are going to take advantage of this and play in it, but we wanted to briefly put up a photo of me in it. I now have a picture of me in the snow. I know, I look very silly. The camera on Mama's phone isn't the greatest. But I was going so fast that I'm sure Mama couldn'tve gotten a decent one! BOL!

What I was doing was running full force all the way around our 1/2 acre fenced back yard and kicking the snow up with my front paws SO I COULD EAT IT! Snow is yummy, everyone knows this!!! I also kept my head low as I was sniffing around in the snow. Let's just say I was SOAKING WET by the time I came in! But now I need to go back out, so I'll bark to you pups later!

Yay! Dogsters, I am SOOO excited! I'm Diary Pick of the Day on Christmas! Thank-you so much, Dogster! I'm very happy that you picked me!!! :D

We did all our presents last night so that the family could sleep in on the holiday. It was amazing, I sat on Mama's lap while she opened her gift in our big red chair and she made a cocoon around us, FUNNY! I also loved sniffing every present that Mama took out of the box, they all smelled so good! I woke Mama up this morning by going into their room, but its Christmas so she didn't mind! She let me up on the bed and we cuddled for nearly an hour, then Mama gave me my stocking! All I gotta say is, talk to ya later, Dogster! I've got some rawhides and squeekies to get to!!!

Merry Christmas!

Hey Dogster!

Its been a while since Mama and I've posted here lately. Nothing new to record, no new tricks, I've just continued being the perfect house dog. :)

Last night, though, I had a new experience. One of Mama's friends, Danese, came over. She's come over before and smells like DOGS. Not only that, she talks in a high pitched voice to me and gets me all excited! It's habitual that I run around the house like crazy! It's been a while since she's been over, and here's what has happened in that time:

Her and her husband Will had a BABY and his name is Oliver. He's only a few months old, maybe two, and they brought him. Mama knew he was coming along with them, so she sat me on the couch with her as we waited and calmed me down, but as soon as Danese walked in I remembered her and got all excited--not only that, she talked to me in her typical high pitched and excited voice. Will set the baby carrier down on a big box and after I greeted Will and Danese I excitedly put my paws up on the box to smell that package that they brought in, but Mama and Will and Danese all told me no, so I just continued with Will and Danese even though the thing they carried in smelled so nice.

After a while, Mama started making me lay down with her and relax, but this is so unusual with Will and Danese. I obeyed though and Mama kept me laying down, but still in seeing and hearing distance in the other room while Oliver got his diaper changed. Once Oliver was changed, Mama told me I was free and I came back in. I was very good and just stayed at Mama's feet. I understood.

Soon, I saw Danese holding Oliver in her arms and walk across the room. From my point of view, I couldn't tell what it was but I can't STAND it when someone carries the kitty across the room so I ran and put my paws up on Danese. She didn't mind and let me sniff Oliver's feet which I enjoyed. After that I behaved, but I still didn't know exactly what Oliver was. Later on, I was sitting on the floor by Mama and Danese gave Mama baby Oliver. At that point, I knew what he was and I did the cutest thing! I laid my head on the chair and just stared at baby Oliver, wagging my tail and smiling with my little underbite. Mama told me what a good girl I was and even though I didn't get to sniff Oliver up close, I was perfectly fine and well behaved.

I'd never really seen a baby before now. Not one under two years or so, so this was a new experience for me and I did grrrreat!

Pounds: Insight

Please read this whole thing. I know it's long and I understand that this isn't Craigslist, but it's important that Dogster members are aware as sad and horrifying this truth is.

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will. First off, all of you people who have ever surrendered a pet to a shelter or humane society should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would stop flagging the ads on craigslist and help these animals find homes. That puppy you just bought will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. Just so you know there's a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it?s dumped at? Purebred or not! About 25% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into a shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses: "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door. Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because the shelter gets paid a fee to euthanize each animal and making money is better than spending money to take this animal to the vet.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 shelter workers depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a shelter worker who we call a euthanasia tech (not a vet) find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves. You see shelters are trying to make money to pay employee pay checks and don?t forget the board of directors needs to be paid too, so we don?t spend our funds to tranquilize the animal before injecting them with the lethal drug, we just put the burning lethal drug in the vein and let them suffer until dead. If it were not a ?making money issue? and we had to have a licensed vet do this procedure, the animal would be sedated or tranquilized and then euthanized, but to do this procedure correctly would cost more money so we do not follow what is right for the animal, we just follow what is the fastest way we can make a dollar. Shelters do not have to have a vet perform their euthanasia?s so even if it takes our employee 50 pokes with a needle and 3 hours to get the vein that is what we do. Making money is the issue here not loosing money.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? Or used for the schools to dissect and experiment on? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right!

I hope that those of you who still have a beating heart and have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head, I deal with this everyday. I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there, unless we the people make some changes and start educating the public. Do research, do your homework, and know exactly what you are getting into before getting a pet. These shelters and humane societies exist because people just do not care about animals anymore. Animals were not intended to be disposable but somehow that is what they are these days. Animal shelters are an easy way out for ONLY YOU, if you get tired of your dog, cat, horse or whatever.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters or worse and only you can stop it. PuppyMills (PetShops), BackYard Breeders & irresponsible owners are the ones to blame for this. I just hope I may changed one persons' mind about taking their dog to a shelter, a humane society, or buying a dog from a PetShop or BackYard Breeder or Online; because no matter how nice the site looks it could just be a PuppyMill in disquise & those poor dogs are usually NOT well cared for, spending their whole lives in tiny cages, many sick, malnourised, overbred & rife with inheritaded defects! If you absolutely must buy a PureBred Pet, PLEASE go to REPUTABLE BREEDER! SO PLEASE PEOPLE ~ SPAY/NEUTER ~ OPT TO ADOPT ~ MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO ~ DO YOUR RESEARCH ~ CHECK AT THE SHELTERS FOR PUREBREDS FIRST THEN FIND A REPUTABLE BREEDER IF A PUREBRED IS WHAT YOU MUST HAVE ~ PROPERLY SOCIALIZE YOUR PET ~ DON'T FORGET SOME BASIC TRAINING, AT LEAST SOME MANNERS.

For those of you that care--- please repost this to at least one other craiglist in another city/state. Let's see if we can get this all around the US and have an impact.

THANK YOU FOR READING & PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG. WE'RE THE ANIMALS' ONLY

A few updates:

Mama's off to Myrtle Beach fur the fourth of July with the family, so we won't be on Dogster fur just a day.

Our neighbor spends about $2300 every year on fireworks... Yes, he's crazy, but guess what! I'm not scared of the fireworks! Mama figured I would be, but nope!

Just a reminder, if you have small fireworks be VERY careful with your dog. You should not only take safety procautions, but you should keep in mind that last night dozens of dogs ran off because they were scared of fireworks. Just look at your local Craigslist listings and you'll see. Be careful. Our dogs are way too important to get lost over silly fireworks.

Enjoy your holiday!

YAY! A Water-proof Dog Collar!

July 3rd 2010 5:21 am

So most of you pups know that I just LOVE to swim in the creek! Well, there was another contest at the Dog Blog for a free water-proof dog collar and I WON! Here's my entry:

What an awesome collar! I could definitely use one! I’m a PUGGLE which is NOT a swimming breed, but Mama always brings me to the creek by our house. It has nice cool waters and on the hot NC summer days, it’s a great way fur Mama to give me exercise in a safe way.

Even though I’m not a swimming breed, Mama and I walk through the creek and there are some deep parts that my small-medium dog body can’t touch in.

The first time I actually swam was one of the first times in the creek. We were gently walking through and I had to pick my head up high so I could walk but then there was a sudden (about three inch) drop, but it was enough to bring me under. Instead of freaking out, I just swam on in the creek! Mama stayed close to me, but then realized that I LOVED to swim! Summer is such an awesome month! I get to go to the creek and SWIM and now I know where the deep parts are and I just JUMP in instead of going under.

A problem is, though, my collar is VERY smelly after a good long swim! Even if I don’t win the contest, we’ll definitely be getting me a second collar with help from the links. Thanks Dogster Dog Blog!

**************************************

I WON! We are so very excited! We will try to post pictures of me in the creek with my new water-proof dog collar when it comes in! Can't wait, we're so grateful to Dogster! We never would have known if it wasn't fur the blog! We highly recommend it to all pups. You can learn a lot!

We have a very sad Puggle....

Well, it's not that bad. It's just that Sammy has PULLED OUT from spending the week at our house. Yes, it is very sad.

Apparently the lady's daughter was very unhappy about leaving Sammy so instead of just going to their grandparents house like planned, Sammy went along.

Sammy is a very loved dog. Hopefully Mama will get her chance with a regular training session with Sammy, even as exciting as over-night training is.
