Several days ago when I was playing around I yelped really loud and, as always, mommy and daddy came running to my rescue. They thought I had injured my right leg as I was favoring it afterwards but it became clear it was my dew claw (I have two per paw) when mommy touched it and I yelped again. Mommy has been doing "daily inspections" of my dew claw and knew it was swollen but this morning she told me she was really worried about me. Turns out the swelling is worse and the redness is worse. She told daddy that if this did not look better by tomorrow evening we have to go to the vet Saturday morning. I asked her to PLEASE come on here and ask all my buddies if they have ever had an experience like this or ever heard of an experience like this and if so, do they have any advise. I ask for your help b/c I am VERY scared of the vet. I literally have a panic attack and hyperventilate and it breaks mom's heart. If I have to go...I have to go. But, we just thought we would ask on here first. Love - Tina.

Has your mommy ever tried any of the calming aids they have at pet stores? My mom is looking at Petco on line right now & she sees all kinds. Maybe if she tried one of those before you left for the vet.
I have never taken them before but u never know
Tina, my sister-at-the-bridge Kirby had an infected toenail once. The vet told mom to soak it in salt water for even a few minutes and that would help. Maybe the dewclaw is infected. You might get your mommie to try that if you will hold still long enough.
Thinking about you sweetie!
We don't have any ideas for you, Tina, but we just wanted to say we're sending lots of pawrayers for your paw! *hugs* A vet visit sounds like a good idea if it's still swollen...
Bella: Mommy is going to ask the vet about some ideas on calming meds. Thank you so much for the suggestion!
Winston: Is epson salt just as good or did you simply mix salt and water? Mommy only keeps sea salt in the house because she has high blood pressure so maybe she will have to go to the store for regular salt if epson salt doesn't work. Thanks!
I think we used epson salt or regular salt. Epson salt is probably the best to use though. You might want to call the vets office to ask for suggestions especially if they know how bad Tina hates car rides. They might be more prone to offering advice in that case rather than going in.
I had a similar problem a while back. Wyoming was digging in the yard and split her nail wide open exposing the quick. When I took her to the vet she gave me calendula to use. The stuff is wonderful! It healed up her nail, reduced swelling, and prevented infection. Plus if they lick it it is harmless. Check it out it may be the magic bullet for you too.
Oh yes! If ti is swollen, try to epsom salt bath.
But... a trip to the vet sounds like the best way to go :(
I don't like to hear that you are in pain, pretty girl, so maybe have momma bring a cheeseburger with her and give you little schnibbles to distract you while the vet is examining you???
Any advise with the word SCHNIBBLES in it is right! I sure hope you feel better soon!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all the advise! Mom is feeling a little more optimistic. Funny how Bad it is when one of us doesn't feel good. If mom or dad get sick they are like "oh well, it will go away" but with if it is one of is... "OMD! I can't stand to see them suffer" or "911 call the vet" or "GET ON DOGSTER NOW!!!". Funny huh?
I agree with schnibbles - definately get some!
Anywho, soaking it and maybe wrapping it so it stays protected might be good. I would call the vet to see if they can tell you something without going in.
My mama is not a vet person, she helps people, but she always uses ice packs for pain and swelling. It doesn't fix the problem but it helps it feel better. She did this to my belly when I got "fixed" and it helped me.
poor Tina! I hope you feel better soon!
