Help a pup out, 'kay?

Hey, everypup (especially those living in the Midwest--Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan) help me out here. Seems the Mom has lost her frickin' mind! Just when I've gotten use to sharing my space with Burt (NOT), the Mom has begun floatin' the idea of adopting a Greyhound from the now shuttered Dairyland Greyhound Race Track in Kenosha, Wisconsin!!!! She heard there are HUNDREDS of dogs of all ages looking for furever homes.

Head on over to The Chgo Crew's BlackPearl Dogs page http://www.dogster.com/dogs/1084910
and check out how you can adopt a retired racer AND make sure there are NO Greyhounds left for the Mom to adopt!

Thanks loads!

Your forever thankful pal,

Ok, this is NUTS!

This cold is NUTS, I tell ya... simply NUTS!!!! Right now it's ZERO at the lake downtown where the Mom is at work. And out by us, by Midway Airport, NOAA says it's currently FOUR DEGREES with a wind chill of MINUS ELEVEN!!!!! YOWZA!

Is it any wonder that I started picking my paws up high during our walk this afternoon? The Dad couldn't figure out why I was doing it. He checked my paws and found no snow or ice. He rubbed my paws on his pants leg (whatta guy) and we walked a bit more. I started picking my paws up high again. He checked again. Still no ice or snow.

NEWS FLASH, Dad: It's COLD!!! I was picking up my paws because they were COLD!!! Duoh!

The Mom is going to order us some Mushers Secret paw wax from the Drs. Foster & Smith's website. Many of our Dogster pals have used it with a lot of success. Hope it helps against the cold. I AM a delicate little diva, you know. ;D

I LOVE Shrimp!!!!

Really, really, REALLY love it! The Dad and the Mom were spending a quiet New Year's at home. The Dad was watching his Masterpiece Theatre Sherlock Holmes dvds, and the Mom was on Dogster (of course). The big screen tv is next to the Mom's desk, so at least they were both in the same room... BOL

The Dad was eating these huge Shrimp he'd bought at Costco. Burt and I were doing our best begging, but the Dad hadn't budged. Then, the Dad asked the Mom those magic words "Can they have Shrimp?" The Mom said, "I don't know, but I'm on-lline so I'll check." Some Googling later, the Mom said "Yes, small amounts without any shell or tail".

Nom, nom, nom, nom... WOW, Shrimp is GREAT!!!!! Happy, happy New Year to all!!!

The NERVE of Some Pups

Well, I can't say I'm particularly happy with the newest development here at home. Seems the Burt is feeling more comfortable here. Seems the Burt is feeling more confident. Seems the Burt is feeling a bit more assertive.

Yesterday and today, when the Mom had the Burt and me Sit, Paw, Down for treats, the Burt made a move to shut me out from the treats!!!!!!!!! When the Mom says Sit, we both sit. When the Mom says Paw, we both give her paw, one paw on her hand, the other paw on her arm (she thinks it's kind of cute, and has been meaning to videotape it for Dogster).

But yesterday and today, when the Mom said Down, the Burt laid down IN FRONT OF ME!!! Between me and the TREATS!!!! The NERVE of some pups! The Mom just laughs and hands me the treat over the Burt's back. She and the Dad think this is just a WONDERFUL development!!! That's NOT the word I'd use...

So, 'tis the Season to GIVE. Give to reputable shelters/rescues. But if you can't give financially, how about donating another precious commodity--your unused stuff? Contact shelters/rescues and ask about their "Wish List". Many times shelters/rescues are looking for items that you may have around the home. Here's AN EXAMPLE--the Wish List from my and Burt's Shelter, the Humane Society Calumet Area in Munster, Indiana:

Items Needed:

13 and 55 Gallon Trash Bags
Lysol/Disinfectant Wipes
Windex and refills
Brooms/Dustpans
Bleach
Laundry Detergant
Large Towels
Blankets
Paper Towels
Powder-Free Latex Gloves
Hand Sanitizer
Mop Replacement Heads (large stringy kind)

6-Foot Nylon or Leather Leashes & Collars
Stretch and Scratch cat execise cage attachment
Double Dish Plastic Puppy Bowls
Cat & Dog Shampoo (regular, flea & tick)
Bagged Timothy Hay (for Rabbits)
One Touch Ultra Test Strips
Cat Condos
Large Dog Crates
Kongs/Dog Toys/Cat Toys
Pet Beds
Kuranda Dog Beds

Rabbit & Guinea Pig Food
KMR (Kitten Formula)
Esbilac (Puppy Formula)

Postage Stamps
Gift Cards (Petsmart, Walmart, Meijer, Target, Office Max, Staples, Petco, etc.)
Gas Cards for Animal Transport Vehicle
20lb. Copier Paper (colored and white)
Card Stock Paper (colored and white)
dry erase markers

####

So, look around your house. Look in the closets. In the basement. In the attic. In the garage. You may have many unused, unneeded items that your local shelter/rescue would welcome with open paws (plus it would declutter your house and add to the positive Fung Shui). :D

Did you know that 1 out of every 3 dogs will get some form of cancer in their lifetime? And 50% of those stricken will die from cancer? And that in our beloved Golden Retriever breed, that number jumps to 75%?

In this time of giving and goodwill toward all paws, please support Canine Cancer research, and please send POP to Sissy *PAWS*, Quincy and their families and to all families that are fighting the good fight.

...one Pain in the Hynie Adopted Brother!!!!!!!

No, not really, but a Queen of All Things can wish, can't she? Today we drove to Indiana so ol' Blabbermouth Burt could see Dr. M and get some booster shots. When we walked in we saw a Lady and two children by the front door taking donations for the Humane Society Calumet Area, the shelter Burt and I came from.

Seems this Family almost adopted Blabbermouth Burt!!!!! How about THAT for a small world??? The Lady told the Mom and the Dad that she had met Burt at the shelter a couple of weeks before he was adopted by us. She came back in to put in an application to adopt Blabbermouth Burt, but our application was already pending!!! We're soooooooo lucky... NOT! ;o

The two children were excited to see Burt again and tried to pet on him. Burt kept cringing each time. Instead of taking Burt, they adopted a smaller Lab mix that they named Shadow. Shadow seemed to enjoy a lot of attention. Shadow is a better fit for them than Blabbermouth Burt... mores the pity...

The reason I'd give Blabbermouth Burt away FREE TO A GOOD HOME? It was such a commotion when we first got there, and we HADN'T had a walk yet... and it had been a LONG drive... I had a small "accident" of the solid kind on the rug right inside PetSmart's doors. And Blabbermouth Burt had to tell EVERYONE who reads his diary about it, as well as all of our friends in the Mitey Mitey Buh-ens Party forum... sheeeeeesh... can a black dog get any redder?

Remember, Burt, I am Queen of ALL Things

Yesterday at class Trixie the Trainer and the Dad made such a big deal about how well Burt did on the Hide 'n Seek-Come Burt, Come game. They worked at it for almost 30 minutes. The Dad was a good sport about it all.

When it was my turn, well, let's just say I approached the whole thing a little more laid-back than my brother Burt. He was so excited. He was almost towing Trixie through the store looking for the Dad. I just couldn't see the point of running around.

I knew the Dad wouldn't leave without me and the Mom was still sitting down resting her bad leg. No need to rush. We weren't goin' ANYWHERE... so I took it at a leisurely stroll. BOL

Well, Burt was still so full of himself when we got home, I decided to remind him that I was Queen of ALL Things!! That night before we went to bed I did my best "Alpha Dog" snap and snarl and put Burt in his place! The way the Dad reacted, you'd think I tried to HURT my little brother. Trust me, Dad, I was just bein' a dog...

What Should We Order???

Timing is EVERYTHING!!! Our old vacuum cleaner just bit the dust (sic) Monday. It lasted through THREE Golden Retrievers, an English Bulldog, a Whippet-mix, a Flat-coated Retriever, a Lab-mix, three cats and four foster litters of kittens!!!!!!!!! Not bad, really...

So, which Dyson Animal upright do you like and why? We have been debating the pros and pros ;) of the DC25 Ball and the DC28 Airmuscle. The Mom can finally get her Purple Animal (did I mention purple is her FAVORITE color even though it makes her look GREEN when she wears it? )

Please pawmail me if you have any suggestions...

p.s. my new brother Burt jumped out the car window when we got to the park today. The nut. Almost gave the Dad a heart attack! I WASN'T gonna mention it, but I couldn't help myself...

My New Brother is a Real Menace

Today he yanked the Mom right off of her feet! Right down onto her hands and knees! It was a real surprise for all of us--me, Burt and the Mom. See, I was at the end of my 15' retractable leash, leaving a little "present" on the park grass for the Mom to pick up. Burt was standing next to the Mom, waiting. quitely. P a t i e n t l y. For once. Until he saw the SQUIRREL!!!!!

Burt lit out after that squirrel. Usually, the Mom runs after him, and I follow along. So when Burt hits the end of his leash, the Mom's forward momentum makes it no big deal. But today she was standing still waiting for me to finish. So, when Burt hit the end of his leash... BAM!!!!! Down the Mom went. Luckily, on the grass, not on the paved path.

The Mom dropped our leashes on the way down so she could break her fall with her hands. The leashes retracted, right into me and Burt. Good thing, that. It startled Burt and stopped him right in his tracks!

The Mom was on the ground saying "come, Burt, come". Every time Burt walked toward her, the leash banged into his side and he'd stop. She'd say "come, Burt, come" and he'd start toward her again. Then "bang" and Burt would stop again. This went on a couple of more times before he finally made it back to the Mom. I, of course, came back to the Mom right away. I've been paying attention to our trainer, Trixie, unlike some dogs I could mention...

Poor Mom. She had to stay home from work and ice her knee. And tomorrow is her birthday! Great present, Burt... a fat knee and a cane--the present that just keeps on giving! Sheeeeesh...
