Best Tricks:
I am a Basic Dog Training Graduate! I know how to sit, sit stay, lay down, down stay and run to my Momma when she calls. I also can make my Momma and Daddy do anything I want if I just stare at them. I have become quite savvy at stealing underpants.

Arrival Story:
In June 2004, my Momma and Daddy began searching for a sibling for Carmela who at the time was 4 months old. They looked on the internet, in the paper in both Dayton and Columbus and by word of mouth. They had no luck. Two months passed and there was a number for a breeder in a "shady" part of Columbus. Momma ignored the ad because she recognized the area I was in. A few days later it was still there. Daddy being the eternal optimist, called the number. They came that night to see me and my siblings. When they go there we were greeted by a the woman who was selling us. She loved dogs so much that she had 13 of them. Momma and Daddy finally know know what a herd of chi's sounds like. They came in with Carmela and played with all my brothers and sisters. I climbed up on my Daddy's lap and fell asleep. I knew he was the one I had to win over. After a power nap I woke up and decided to show them I was the dog. They took me and my sister who was milk chocolate and white outside to play. Carmela chased my sister around while I followed Carmela everywhere. Finally Carmela turned her attention back to me. We played and got along very well. I couldn't fight with her just yet! I heard Daddy ask Momma if she wanted to get me. She looked at my Daddy and said "If we don't leave here with him, I am divorcing you". I don't know what that means but it must have been bad. They told the lady they wanted me and where was the closest ATM. Daddyleft and went to get the money out. When they drove me home, I laid on my Momma's lap. I had fun exploring my new home. It was really quiet compared to my birth home. The next morning Momma found the name Benito which is the spanish form of Benedict. In Latin, Benidictus means blessed. Momma says my name is appropriate according to the conditions I living in. The breeder I came from loved doggies. She just had to many to give a lot of attention to. Her daughter liked to smack our bottoms when we were bad. I get scared when I hear loud voices or Momma and Daddy are walking around quickly. They have never hurt me but I still get scared sometimes. I am glad Momma and Daddy saved me from that home. I hear them mention the words "backyard breeder". Momma loves me so much that she went to Petsmart and signed us up for training classes. She says we are working on my issues together. I love her. Woof!

Bio:
Black dogs and strangers make me nervous. Momma says it is because of my environment for my first 6 weeks. She loves me so much that I have to protect her everywhere we go. I growl and bark at other dogs or people that might get too close. I am really affectionate to my family, but that is a secret no one can find out. Update: My Momma and I went to see a doggy psychiatrist because I have separation anxiety and fear based aggression. She says I am making progress.

The Buzz about Benny

Tonight, my momma said she needed to relax and got into that thing that looks like a giant water bowl. She had these bright smelly things on the edges of the water bowl. I wanted to make sure she was ok, so I peaked over the side. Yep, she was ok. I decided to go see what Carmie was barking at.

While I was searching for my inner bark, I came to a revelation. She spends enough time away. Doesn't her boss understand 8 hours is a long time to be away from home? She has chihuahuas to worry about. That was it. I had had it! I came running back to Momma and I jumped in to the water bowl. Momma was so happy to see me that she screamed. I had to make sure she was safe from Sea Monkeys and other creatures. The area was secure. Then, I decided the water was too hot to drink, so I climbed up to her shoulders. That was much better.

Momma doesn't understand the daily stress of a chihuahua. I wake up really early when she does. Then I follow her around. I eat a few nibbles of breakfast to tide me over until brunch. Then I go lay back in bed until Daddy wakes up. I follow him around. After he leaves, I finish my food. Then Carmela and I whine and sit on top of the couch while he leaves. By this time we have our morning nap. Momma comes home for lunch and we wake up. We follow her around and beg for food. Then she leaves. We nap again. Then she comes home. Then I follow her some more waiting to sit on her lap.
These are stressful times. And she wonders why I jumped in the giant water bowl with her! She couldn't handle my life!
Well, good night! I am spent.

I love my Momma. It is my job to protect her. The other night my Momma and Daddy were joking around. I didn't like it. GRRRR. I heard Momma tell Daddy she was going to train me to poop in his shoes. She says this all the time. Around 2:30 am every night, I have to go take care of business. I jump off the bed and go in my litter box. In the morning, Momma kept saying she smelled something and asked me where it was. She went into the closet to get her shoes and then I heard her laughing. Daddy woke up and asked her what was funny? She said that there was poop in his shoes. Not his old shoes but his dress shoes he wears to work. Momma says it is a funny coincidence, little does she know, I am a bilingual dog. Now she calls Daddy Senor Poopy Shoes. I say, tease my Momma again and your gloves will get it next time.

My new tricks.

I saw Carmie jump on top of the chair to get to the kitchen table. She has been doing this for a long time. Woof. I thought it looked like fun so I decided to do it. Momma got mad but then she started laughing. I guess this is ok.

Momma went to orientation last Wednesday for our training class. She came home and kept putting a treat near my head. After a few minutes I figured out that when my butt hits the floor, I get the treat. Soon, I would just sit when I saw her get the treat out. She tells me I am smart. It looks like it is time to practice some more.
