Arrival Story: Atom was Nikita's last of 8 puppies born. She had been delivering her babies from 10 pm the night before and Atom was born at 5:05 am the next morning. She had been so exhausted from it all, and when Atom came out she cut his umbilical cord and didn't do it right. He began to have what they call a umbilical hernia and wasn't moving at all. We were so scared. Thank goodness we had someone there who knew what they were doing. She snatched him up and tied off his umbilical cord with some thread. Then we placed him back with his mother and she 'licked' him alive. How amazing is that?!! Bio: Atom was such a gentle giant. He always thought that he was a tiny puppy even when he was at his largest of 105lbs!! Atom's life was cut too short. He was trying to get to a neighbors cat that was on the other side of the privacy fence. During the process of digging under the fence he got stuck. He ended up bruising his side, which in turn he got an infection in his lung, and it turned into pneumonia. He faught for his life for almost a month, but then it got to be too much and when they laid him down for yet another x-ray, he drowned in his own fluid. Poor guy. He was very loved and will always be missed. -- The picture of the Bassett Hound was Atom's girlfriend, TAZ. What a strange couple, but they were so good with each other.
