Arrival Story: We are puppy raisers for Guiding Eyes For The Blind. Babe is our fourth puppy. She is a black female labrador. Her littermates are named:
Balsam, Baldwin, Barlow, Beau, Blaine, Bamboo, and Belgium. Mom is Thelma, Dad is Alex. We have high hopes for this little girl. One day we hope she will become a guide dog and give someone the gift of independence.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1956 to enrich the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely, thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and expanded horizons of opportunity. Since that time, Guiding Eyes has become one of the foremost guide dog schools in the world, graduating more than 6,000 guide dog teams. It provides superbly bred Guiding Eyes dogs, professional training and follow-up support services to students at no cost to them and depends on contributions to fulfill its mission. The comprehensive cost of breeding, raising, preparing, training, and supporting a Guiding Eyes team is $45,000. Guiding Eyes for the Blind's Headquarters and Training Center is located in Yorktown Heights, New York and the Canine Development Center is in Patterson, New York.

Babe sings:If I had words to make a day for you. I'd give you a morning... golden and true. I would make this day last... for all time. And fill the night...with moon shine
My family got the greatest news last night. I have been officially named a brood for GEB. I will be carefully bred and continue the lines of exceptional guide dogs. Only the cream of the crop are chosen after careful evaluation. If all goes well, my family will get to raise one of my puppies once I am bred and deliver!
I am now back at Guiding Eyes For The Blind. I left my puppy raising family on June 27th. There were lots of hugs, and well wishes and many tears when I left.
I had my IFT (In For Training Test) on June 30th and I aced it! I did a very nice job, very calm and did everything I was supposed to do.
The folks at GEB really like me, so much that they are evaluating me to be a breeding dog! Only the cream of the crop are even considered for this. I will have lots more testing to go through. If it works out, I will have "little babes" who will go on to one day perhaps be future guide dogs. If I am not meant to be a breeder, I will go on to guide training. Either way, I am one special girl!
Right now I am living in the CDC (Canine Development Center). I have lots of fun things to do each day and am very happy. I will keep you posted!
On June 27 th 2009, I am leaving my family and returning back to Guiding Eyes For The Blind for my formal guide dog training. My family will miss me so very much but this is what I was born to do. I am going to try my hardest to be able to graduate and assist a visually impaired graduate. I am a lucky dog to be able to give someone the gift of independence!
I have made many wonderful friends here on Dogster.
