Arrival Story: My Boxer/Pit died last month. He had been my 19th birthday present that I picked out at the pound. He was an amazing dog who lived until the sweet old age of 14. I was not ever intending to replace him with another dog, but I did not know how lonely the house would be without him. My kids and husband had heard me say time and again that I was not getting another dog when my old one died, but - never say never, I guess. I decided to go small. I had searched shelters online, but found myself extremely unhappy seeing all the dogs without homes. Many of the pets had health issues that I was not ready to take on. While looking online at Chi's, after researching the breed, I found Hazel. Her breeder had a video of her posted and I fell in love with her. She was one state away, in California. My husband used his frequent flyer miles to fly me down. I rented a car and drove an hour to meet the breeder, who appeared to really love her dogs. She has show dogs and also raises the puppies in her home. Hazel did not whine nor bark during the hour ride in the car to the airport, the two hour wait, or the whole ride home. She did not whine when she went in her playpen that first night and my kids were thrilled with their early Christmas gift (that they never thought they would have). She has been a joy. Very sweet and loving.

Bio: I found Hazel on a website, www.munchkinlandchihuahuas.com
Her breeder was very knowledgable and has great love for all her dogs, who are raised indoors with the family. It really showed when Hazel came home how much she had already been loved and was so used to people! We are so grateful to Debra for being such a responsible breeder. She posts a lot of information on her website about how to care (feeding, vet trips, etc.,) for your Chi. It is worth while to have a look and read what she has to say. Also, if you have questions she is so sweet about answering all emails that come through!

I am 100% potty trained now! Thanks to my doggie door and my Gerber Meat Sticks. If I am at home I go outside, do my business, and then come in and stand by the refrigerator door and get my treat. My mom says I am a smart baby and I made her so happy! She has half a bottle left of her Orange Nature's Miracle that she can use for something else now - like when the human brother and sister spill on the carpet. Santa brought me a pink, chew purse for Christmas - I am such a good girl.

My PUP PAL Maizey is actually my cousin! She gets very excited when I am around and we've not been allowed to do more than sniff one another. She doesn't seem to calm down when I am present. We are supposed to go camping together next June. If anyone has some ideas for our mom's on how to get us to make friends, please send me a note!

Hazel made it to her first trip to the vet. She was nervous, but made it through. She has plans to be spayed in three more months. She is using her dog door 95% of the time. She only has accidents if I don't wake up immediately in the morning and get her out of her playpen that she sleeps in. She loves coming inside after a trip outside and getting her Gerber Meat Stick. She enjoys going to grandma's during the 20 hours that I work a week. Grandma has two Boston Terriers and two Mini Schnauzers- which sniff through the gate to the kitchen or the playpen, depending on where Hazel is, but have not yet been allowed to play due to Hazel's small size. I have read that for the first six months, Chis have a soft spot that all other breeds do not have, so it is best to use extreme caution not to knock into them (as dogs do in play) until it hardens up/closes up. So, she is off limits for play until they have smelled each other for a while.
Hazel was 2 lbs 8 oz at her last visit. I'll update her progress!
