Arrival Story: I had wanted a dog for several years. While visiting my sister in Ohio at Thanksgiving, we checked out her local shelter to "just look." This particular shelter, in the boonies ... farmland, Appalacian Mountains ... is a high kill shelter. They house about 100 dogs at a time, and usually only have one adoption a week. (They often advertise on Craigslist, hoping rescue organizations will drive down and save the dogs.) So we walk in and it's dark and damp, and the sound of barking is deafening. Yet one little soul is sitting in her cage, quiet as can be. My youngest nephew sees her first and says, "Aunt Amy, there's your dog!" I ignore him and migrate to the box of wiggling, six-week-old rott / shepherd mix pups they've just brought in, but my niece and nephew are insistent I come take a look. The moment I saw Rosie I knew she was the one. The woman who helped us said that this dog was unusually polite when she got her food and rarely barked. (She had been found wandering on the side of the road.) This eleven-week-old, red-headed baby was placed in my arms and melted my heart. The staff at the shelter rejoiced that one of their residents was going home. Rosie was beautiful even then as a stinky, skinny, worm-infested, flat-footed baby. Over the course of weeks, I got her fattened up, shinny, and on the road to health. Now two years-old, Rosie has been a true delight. Besides her beauty and softness, she is the sweetest thing on four wheels. She loves to spoon and snuggle, and is the loyalist of friends.
