A diary? For me?

"It's not a tumor!" but it is. :(

I'll let my person do the talking:

What was a routine visit for anal glands turned out to be a lot more than that. The vet noticed a lump near Hershey's genitalia as an incidental finding as she was palpating him, and we opted to do a cytology.
The DVM just called with the results: a malignant nerve sheath tumor. Hershey's going in on Tuesday for further bloodwork and x-rays.

This really did come out of the blue. He's been to the vet a bunch of times this year for hypothyroid workups and none of the DVM's caught it. Worried for my boy.

Have a copy of the cytology report for those who can interpret or are curious:

source:
3 inch firm mass near the right caudal mammary gland, 2 smears.

Microscopic description:
A highly cellular sample is present on a pale basophilic background with low numbers of red cells and consists of aggregates and individually scattered spindle cells. the spindle cells display moderate anisocytosis, anisokaryosis, round to slightly ovoid basophilic nuclei, stippled chromatin, one to three prominent blue round nucleoli, and moderate amounts of wispy basophilic cytoplasm. occasional hyalinized collagen fibrils or amorphous pink stippled matrix type material seen associated with these cells. scattered bionucleated cells and crown cells are noted. few well granulated mast cells and rare macrophages are also noted. no infectious agents observed.

Microscopic findings:
Spindle cell tumor

Comment:
Morphology of the cells is most compatible with a hemangiopericytoma/nerve sheath tumor. These are typically locally invasive tumors with a low metastatic rate. Other soft tissue sarcomas cannot be excluded. tissue biopsy with histiopathology is recommended for definitive classification and possibly grading.

Why, Dogster? A final diary.

Hershey's person here.

We are devastated, to say the least, about the impending shutdown of Dogster. Catster (and Dogster) were once fantastic communities of animal loving people and their pets. We learned so much from this website, and met so many great people, through "talking" as our pets.

- I use Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook. If any of you want to stay in touch that way, drop me a message here or email (JessicattNY@gmail.com) I'd hate to lose contact with all the great Catsters and Dogsters I've met over the years.

- There is also CatScouts, for the cat inclined which I use "as" Maus: http://catscouts.mousebreath.com/

If there are any alternative communities, please let us know.
It's been fun!

thanks everyone for your gifts and rosettes!

this definitely makes up for all those fireworks that have been going off around here!

Snow!

The people may be tired of all this white stuff by now, but I sure love it. Tho these days I can get a little stiff sometimes when it's cold. Today wasn't a problem. I jumped and romped through the snow like a puppy! For some reason though the humans didn't want to stay out long. Something about it being freezing and windy and cold. Silly humans. They need a nice fur coat like me so they can enjoy the snow! How is the weather where the rest of you pups are?

let's play a game!

hi everypup! Let's have some fun!

Would love everyone's (non) professional opinion on what breeds of dog I could be mixed with. I came from a shelter and people seem to have differing opinions of my mix! my human had the wisdom panel DNA test done for me, but she's skeptical of how accurate it could be.

what do YOU think I'm mixed with?
there's no right answer because there's no way of knowing exactly what I am, bol

Mmm vallytine?

i heard the humans that live in the tiny box thing with moving pictures, talk about some day called "Vallytines", today.

my human said it's a day where you do nice things for someone you love.

i thought and thought and then it came to me..

that I don't have a doggy valentine to do nice things for! what's a dog to do?

then I saw that Cesar Milan's friend Duncan Fiona was looking for a valentine

it made my tail wag!

http://www.cesarsway.com/packgallery/packprofiles/duncan

isn't she pretty?

that smile!

those eyes!

::sigh!::

and guess what?

she's a labrador! i'm part Labrador, so we already have something in common!

and when I saw on her page that she likes to scavenge and sniff around.. i like to do that too!! i love sniffing and sniffing around my yard for critters and interesting things. I found a jackpot inside tho, in a little box with sand in it. it had the yummiest smelling brown treats in it, but since my human doesn't like when i try to get some for her, I bet Duncan would!

duncan fiona, would you be my vallytine? if you were my vallytine, we could run around and around the yard to burn off our energy, playing chase and frisbee and ball, and then have a calm and relaxed cuddle on the sofa! you could have one of my cat friends to play with too! they don't like me much but i know they wouldn't say no to a pretty dog like you.

would you be mine?

luv,
hershey.

Ooh, I like tag!

I've been tagged by Hunter! Ohboyohboy I love to play tag!

1. I may have a big tough bark, but I'm actually a scaredy cat! The four cats I live with chase me around, and I run from them!
2. Though I'm a retriever mix - I'm afraid of the water.
3. I loooooooooooove cheese, and understand the word, even if it's spelled!
4. My human-mom adopted me from a shelter when I was a puppy - the shelter rescued me and my littermates from Virginia!
5. Even though I'm not supposed to have table scraps, I love pizza crust!
6. I understand several non-verbal hand signals in addition to regular commands. My human-mom taught me down, sit, and stay, in hand signals.
7. No one knows what my actual mix is. I've been told I could have golden retriever, Labrador retriever, newfoundland, Chesapeake bay retriever, Irish Setter, Duck Tolling Retriever, English Springer Spaniel, or even Flat Coat Retriever in me! That's a lot of different things!

Is this thing on? Testing.. onetwo..

Hi, this is my very own page! My human mom is nicely taking care of it for me because I can't really use a keyboard with my big feet! Now what was I supposed to do again..

Oh yeah! I guess I should tell you all a little about myself. My name is Hershey Bear, or Hershey for short. I don't remember much of my life before I came to live with my human mom and the rest of the family, but I do remember being in this strange place with lots of other dogs and cats in a metal thing called a "cage". I wasn't there for very long though, because my owner was taken by my charm and adopted me right away! Humans are suckers for big brown puppy eyes.

I just looovee cookies, and playing ball in the backyard. And walks are my favorite things in the world because I get to mark all the trees that I see! My human mom always says I overdo it but a dog's gotta do what a dog's gotta do! I also live with four cats who never want to play with me. I don't understand why they try and smack my nose when I bark at them. Guess they don't like to wrestle! I'm getting kinda hungry from all this writing so I'm going to go watch my human mom eat and try and sneak a little chicken off her plate. Mmm, I love chicken! See you all around!
