Mom came home this afternoon and I got excited. I know you can hardly imagine me getting excited and all, but I did. Then I asked Mom to let me outside so she turned around to open the door again. All of a sudden there was this little "drumroll" sound and tiny little balls started to fall from the sky, just like Mr. Moose on Captain Kangaroo when he would tell all those ping-pong ball jokes. Only these were smaller than ping-pong balls, and Mom said that was good or lots of cars and such would be dented and all the insurance adjusters would be working round the clock. What in the world is she talking about?
So I stopped in my tracks in the back hallway, then I turned tail and ran back into the living room. No way am I going out there with little balls falling from the sky! I know, I know, it almost sounds like one of those heavenly miracles for dogs, but these were NOT tennis balls. Mom said they are called hail and they are made of water droplets that form and start to fall from the clouds, but then a wind whips them back up into freezing temperatures, sometimes many, many times over, before they finally fall all the way down. The more times they are blown back up and around before falling, the more layers of ice they get and the larger they become and the later the insurance adjusters have to work each night.
Mom went out and caught a few and ate them. I wanted to go out and eat a few myself, but frankly, I was a little rattled! The hail didn't last long and then Mom and Lexie went out into the yard to check it out. I wouldn't budge. Finally, Mom came in and grabbed me and made me go outside. It wasn't scary at all then, just kinda cold on the paws, like snow, only it felt different, like frozen peas. Wow. So this was my introduction to hail, and hail's introduction to me!
