Leave a bone for Phoenix

Nicknames: Phoen, Phoenie Beanie, Bean, Beano Burrito, Pheonie Pachini, Phoenix Marie (like when she's busted for stealing her sister's toy)

 Quick Bio:
| -purebred | -pound dog | -dog rescue | |
Likes: fetching her Kong ball (or tennis ball, or any kind of ball, or anything that can be fetched), sleeping on mom's lap on the couch, kisses from anyone, attention - good or bad - from Zahra (the cat)

Pet-Peeves: being made to do tricks before you throw the ball for her, being too tired to fetch the ball after an hour or so, not being allowed on the couch anymore (I got tired of constantly cleaning dog hair off it)

Favorite Toy: ball - did someone say ball? she loves her Kong ball, and also her tug of war rope, any plastic soda or water bottle she can rip the lid off, her springpole

Favorite Food: raw lamb bones, green tripe (yuck), also likes apples, pears & carrots

Favorite Walk: anywhere she can be off-leash, hiking in the wilderness

Best Tricks: close the door, take a bow, back it up, high-five, roll over, howl, "attack" - which means jump up and lick your face

Arrival Story: I received a pit bull calendar for Christmas in 2001. I knew that the beautiful black and white pit bull on the front cover would somehow be my next dog. I had a bad habit of visiting the shelters even when I wasn't necessarily ready for my next dog. And there she was, waiting for me at the Oakland, CA SPCA. She was beaten up by her siblings in the cage with her and had a big scrape on her nose. She was so happy when I took her out of there that I just had to take her home. After one day of having her in my home, I couldn't imagine life without her.
Poor little Phoenie had flees, mange (due to a poor immune system), other mysterious skin problems and a bladder control problem when we got her. After a few thousand dollars (over the years), she's good as new - except the mysterious skin problems, but she's a very good girl about taking her medicine.
Update 4/10/06: Because of Phoenix's poor immune system (due to poor breeding, thanks to all the back yard breeders out there), at the age of only four, she has now developed cancer. She had surgery a few weeks ago to try to remove the cancerous tumors. We are waiting for the lab results to see if she will be ok or if the cancer will be terminal (update the next week: lab results showed the tumor to be a mass cell tumor grade 2, she had to have half her ear removed).
To all those out there looking for a new dog: please do not support back yard breeders by adopting from them (even if it seems like you are rescuing them), check out the shelters or rescue groups instead! Maybe this way people will stop breeding their dogs (especially pit bulls) just to make a 100 bucks. So sad.
Update 11/20/08: Well she's still alive and kickin'. In the last few years she has had two more cancerous tumors removed but is doing great now. Of course I am expecting more problems in the future but she has been worth it all.

Bio: Because of Phoenix, I have decided that pit bulls (and pit mixes) are the only kind of dog I will ever have. I just love her goofiness, sweet disposition, intelligence, cuddliness, tolerance (of us), bravery, athletism and her excitement - basically every possible thing about her. In fact, I can't think of one thing I would change about her! I wish more pit bulls out there could have good, loving homes where they were given structure, love and affection. Then more people could know about their greatness.

Forums Motto: If you throw it, I will chase it.
