we didn't teach this to her, but when she wants attention, she sits up on her haunches and holds her paws out, almost like human behavior.
We had lost our house dog to cancer in September 2003, she was 10 and named Summer. My wife was too heartbroken to talk about another dog and I thought I was too. I never could shake the emptiness of not seeing a loving dog every morning when I got up. Not too long afterwards I started looking for a puppy. I remembered my uncle having several English Shepherds and using them on his cattle farm. At night they were excellent watchdogs at my uncles' house, yet very affectionate to their master. I started looking around for breeders and found excellent support on The English Shepherd club site.
We found a breeder in north central Missouri and drove up there the day after Thanksgiving 2003. There were about 10 pups in the litter and I was looking at the tri color (black, tan and white) ones like my uncle had, but this sable colored one had already endeared itself to my wife and then it walked up to me with a plastic bowl in it's mouth, while all the other pups were trying to get a meal from their mama, so it was a shoe in, we were picked instead.
