I took a herding instinct test on October 25th. I passed the test and got my "first leg." (Which sounds funny to me, I already have four legs!) Mom says I need to pass the test twice to get a herding instinct title after my name, HIC.
There is a video of my test on you tube if you want to see me in action! Just search for Ladd Herding Instinct Test. My sister Abby took the test and passed too - her video is called Abby Herding.

Hi I am from Delaware and have a rough coat collie, 1 1/2 years old. I am wondering about the herding instinct test. Does your dog train for it? Could you tell me about it, or where to get some information. Right now my dog is being trained basic obedience. Thanks, Nancy
I just saw your comment, sorry - I didn't receive notification!
The herding instinct test is just to see if your collie has the instinct to herd sheep. So there is no training, you just bring your collie into the enclosure with the tester. He or she will evaluate your dog. If you pass it twice you get a certificate from the AKC. If you collie does really well, you can go on and take classes and earn other herding titles.
Our collie club will be doing another test in the fall if you are interested. It is a fun day - we have obedience, rally and the herding test all at one location. (in CT)
