When Andy first came into our lives at the tender age of 2-4 months old, the Vet's told us he wouldn't live past two years old because his hips were already gone. But he has beat the odds...his 10th birthday - one we estimated - is March 15th. Through the years, he has been to the Vet, a lot. First for diagnosis, then bi-lateral shoulder surgery for OCD. Then assessment for either hip-replacement or a FHO, but he it was determined that he was not really a candidate for either because he sheds bacteria in his urine. He has had injections and xrays and been poked and prodded. We even had him assessed for a Reiki study at VA Tech. We always thought that someday his hips would just become too painful.

But, a few months ago he developed a neurological condition which has made the mucles in his face and mouth deteriorate. He went from being the first to finish eating to the last because he just couldn't get his tongue to work right. Then we noticed that his face was becoming thinner. A few weeks ago he developed a growth in his ear and we had to have it removed. Surprisingly not cancer, but then a couple of weeks ago, we noticed that he was coughing and choking while eating. Then last week he started having trouble breathing. He just can't take air into his lungs. We took him to Dr. Eric and he finally found a tumor. He says there is probably one on the brain, too, but this one is in Andy's throat.

Having mostly senior dogs you know that you are going to deal with health issues, but this one is a complete surprise. It just goes to show you that you don't really know what will bring your demise. Andy has dealt with a painful health condition [his hips] his whole life and yet he never really let it keep him down. He ran and swam and misbehaved and cuddled and bullied and played and ate and loved to his heart's content - I hope. And then this condition comes out of nowhere and sweeps him away.

I don't know the day, but he will be gone soon and I miss him already.
