Arrival Story:
Burney is the third pup we raised for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). He was an easy pup to raise, very smart & attentive. He learned quickly & did well in obedience training. However, Burney began to exhibit some fear of noises, especially loud car engines & truck/bus motors. He would try to run away from these sources of noise, which is not a good trait for a service dog. After being evaluated by the professional staff at CCI NE, it was decided Burney would be released from the program. This meant we, as his puppy raisers, would have first right to adopt him, which we did. He is now a wonderful, mature dog who enjoys his walks in the neighborhood and helps train the younger pups in CCI classes. He has mostly outgrown the fear of engines but still occasionally tries to avoid some noises. Burney travels very well and we take advantage of this when we use our motor home. He and Toby really like to travel so they go everywhere with us.

Bio:
My pictures show me learning to use the doggy door. I figured that out in a day & a half. My toy box was a lot of fun, but I sometimes played so hard that I had to sleep inside the box for a while. My buddies, Rudy & Toby are showing me how to watch things from our deck. Two new photos of me show my cute eyes up close in one and my first meeting of my uncle Mercer and Shea. We had a good time together at Shea's fund raising event www.walkforshea.com We found out recently that Burney was named after a beautiful California State Park, Burney Falls http://www.burney-falls.com/ in Northern California. Go to the site & see the natural beauty he was named for. Newer pictures show pictures of Burney on the beach with his favorite toy, the flying squirrel. He will walk with his flying squirrel in his mouth knowing that we get to stop somewhere along the walk to play fetch. He just loves it!

My "Change of Career" decision

Well, after all those months of being raised & trained by Jim & Michele I suddenly became afraid of loud engines on busses & trucks. Even car engines freaked me out.

So they contacted the training staff at CCI and did some very special things to work out this fear of engines with me. But in spite of all the great treats they gave me and praise for doing a good job, I still didn't like those engines.

Well, guess what? They decided to release me from the program and I got adopted by my puppy raisers! It was my secret plan all along, but don't tell anyone.

Now I live with them full time and help raise Wheeler. We take walks all the time and I get to carry my "flying squirrel" with me till we stop and play fetch in the grass.

I love my "forever home" and they love me. We get to go away in the winter to places like Florida and Texas. I ride with Toby in the motor home and we visit lots of fun places. Last winter Wheeler went with us too.

We're very happy.
