Hedwig has moved on as of this afternoon. We had an amazing, sunny, breezy day today in which to say goodbye. We took a long walk in the Castro, where Hedwig once again touched the heart of someone, this time an elderly lady who was waiting in front of a clinic and feeling lonely. Leave it to him to try to get extra karma points on the last day.
We then went to the beach. It was so beautiful, and Hedwig said hi to some dogs and people, and even mustered the strength for a very short trot in the surf. I was reminded of when he used to run full speed. It was awe-inspiring. He played with a great stick, and rested in the shade when his hips started to hurt. He was quite happy.
At home, I lay with him for an hour, brushing him and giving him a frosty paw. Soon it was time. Too soon. We went to the van ( I couldn't carry him otherwise), with my support group and my pup. I lay with him in there, and fed him chocolate and sang to him. Soon it was over. Again, too soon. It was peaceful, and I held my baby's head in my arms as we drove to the vet.
I hurt so much baby boy. I know it was for the best. But already the loft is empty and my heart is broken. I'll be able to move on in time, with you always in my heart and looking over me. For now, please don't watch me grieve. Play with your new healthy body and spirit, and come back in a few weeks, when I'm able to smile again.
Love, your mamma, your best friend, your guide and your student.

Hey y'all. Wow, I'm dog of the day!!! So many people are writing and it's making mom smile a lot, though she's crying a lot too. I don't know why she is, but I sure know I'm doing everything I can to make it better.
What a great week I've had! Mom's taken me to see ALL of my friends and to my favorite pet shops, where they gave me treats and toys and frosty paws and bones. I got to go to my favorite parks too, and every day I've been getting steaks and fresh fruit and cottage cheese. Last night, I even got buffalo!!! I don't know where Mom's been hiding the good stuff, but I'm glad she decided to use it.
She's been sleeping downstairs with me too, on the air mattress. I can't get up and down the stairs so well anymore, but it's nice to spoon her in the morning. Mommy's gonna go get ready now, cuz she says we're going to the beach and that a nice photographer lady is gonna take our pictures there. I love getting my picture taken!!!
Well, I need to go smooch Mom again, she's starting to leak. Thanks to all my new friends for the well wishes, and I'll see everyone real soon!
Hedwig, the luckiest dog in the whole world.

Well, Mom thinks it's neat for me to start writing a diary, so here I am. I'm dictating, she's typing. I've been here in San Francisco for about 5 weeks, and it's a pretty cool place. Mom's got a neat loft, though I slip a lot on the hardwood floors, and the metal stairs have scared both of us a few times, but I'm getting around fine now!
She let's me sleep in bed with her most nights, which I LOVE. But, I do have a really neat big ol' dane sized crate with a fleece pad and tons of toys and a fan. Mom and her friends say I'm spoiled, but it seems just natural to me. Mom got me a sparkly pink collar too. It makes lots of people think I'm a girl, but she said that no one will tease me because I'm gonna be bigger than all the other dogs.
She has me in puppy socialization and puppy kindergarten too, and I'm learning to sit, and to walk well on a leash. I love other dogs too! I can play rough and hard with the big ones, and light and gentle with the tiny and shy ones. I don't care as long as they play with me! We also take walks every day, and she takes me to parks a lot. We get stopped a lot, and people pet me and seem to like me a whole lot, which is pretty cool, because I like getting pets and treats and attention. Mom says to get used to it, because as I get bigger, they'll pay even more attention to me!
I have had to go to the vet a few times, once for growing pains and once for a urinary tract infection. It's not great, but the vet is nice and gives me treats, and I always feel better soon after! Now, if I could just get the hang of this potty training business. It's hard, and I know mom gets frustrated, and sometimes loses her patience. But, we're working with her and she's getting a lot better!
Ok, time to go shopping at the furniture store. I get to go everywhere! Yay!
