Arrival Story:
My friend told me that she had seen an old Yorkie in a shelter near us and she knows that I love the older dogs and I hink that they should all have loving homes at the end. I went down to take a peek and found Guy in a sitting on a pillow in his cage looking sad and coughing so much that his tongue was black. I told the people at the shelter that I only had $40 in my pocket and asked if they would take that for him as he looked like he might be dying. They told me that he was around 15 years old and they took my money. I guess that they thought that he wouldn't be around much longer either. I brought him home to a quiet, warm place to die and he decided to stick around!!!

Bio:
Guy had to have 17 teeth removed when he came to me. A couple of them were easily removed by hand!!! Since he was left with only the top two canines, he got the perverse nickname of Gator. His trachea is so flat that a vet I showed an x-ray to thought that he must be dead!!! Anyway, a specialist was able to remove the teeth but said that Guy couldn't be kept under anaesthetic long enough to neuter him as well. He fanicies himself a "ladies" man to this day, although he is way too old to cause any trouble in that area. Guy also has bilateral luxated patellae and his walk is affected but it doesn't keep him down. He has accompanied me to several dog rescue events as a participant in the display booth and even went on a fundrising walk for the local Humane Society. He was game to go the whole distance and I had to rein him in and carry him to protect his legs. He has so much spirit and wisdom that I am constantly inspired by his courage. If the age given to me by the shelter people was correct, Guy is 18 years old now. He is pretty delicate but still is a wonderful companion and friend and I cherish every day that we have together.

On September 29, 2009, I had to leave this world. I was old and my body was tired but my mind stayed sharp right to the end. My mom knew I was going and she held me in her arms and I went to sleep peacefully. I was the best dog that ever lived.

I haven't been on my page for a very long time but I just wanted everyone to know that I am going to be 20 years old in October and I am stil here!!! I have recently had a seizure that my vet thinks is probably a brain tumor but I am still eating and tooling around and yelling at my owner for food and to go outside. I am losing weight so you wouldn't want to see me just out of the bathtub anymore but my mom thinks I am the best-looking dog on the planet even now. I am still sharp and I am doing my best to stay with my family. I know that they won't know what to do without me.

Sorry that I haven't written for so long, but I have been really busy fighting for my life. Last August, my mom noticed some hard lumps under my ears and took me to the vet to check it out. My vet took a sample and told my mom that I had lymphoma. Without treatment, that kind of cancer usually kills dogs one or two months after dianosis. Mom and Dad love me and I love them. I still was enjoying taking care of my family...I am the top dog you know...so mom took me to a specialist who helps dogs with cancer. That began a long period of getting up very early every Friday to go into the clinic to get chemotherapy. I hate to get up early so my mom would put me to sleep in my car seat basket every Thursday night and then she could just pick me and my basket up in the morning and I could sleep until I got to the vet's place. Boy , am I ever glad that mom thought of that!!!!

Anyway, I finshed chemo on February 2, 2007 and the vet says that I am in remission. I just had a follow up check up and everything is still OK. The vet says that sometimes remission periods can last as long as two years. Given that I am nearing 20, I think that will be enough time.I am still the top dog and love my food and my periodic checks on the old homestead, followed by a nap or two. I love to go out with my mom in my stroller and see what is going around in the big world. I am tough and I am a survivor. I have to be since my family can't get along without me!!!!
